ByTravisLoller TheAssociatedPress NASHVILLE, TENN. The president of the historically black American Baptist Col- lege says some individuals are considering removing financial support after pas- tors criticized the school's inclusion of a lesbian bishop in a lecture series. A group of Baptist pas- tors calls the invitation to Bishop Yvette Flunder of Oakland, to be a speaker and worship leader next week "irresponsible, scan- dalous, non-biblical, and certainly displeasing to God." The pastors ask school President Forrest E. Harris in a news release to disinvite Flunder, who is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and is le- gally married to another woman, her partner of 30 years. The pastors also ask National Baptist Conven- tion, USA, President Jerry Young to declare where he stands on the issue. The pastors group and the college in Nashville, Tennessee, are affiliated with the historically black National Baptist Conven- tion. American Baptist College is known for its role in the civil rights movement. Stu- dents have included famous civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, the Georgia congressman who helped organize lunch counter sit- ins as a young man and was among the protesters beaten at Selma, Alabama, 50 years ago this month. In a phone interview, Harris noted the college's long commitment to social justice. "We will not toler- ate intolerance," he said. OAKLAND WOMAN Pastors, donors rip Baptist school over lesbian bishop's invitation By Amy Taxin The Associated Press LOSANGELES Three people were arrested Wednesday on charges of running four sham vocational schools in Southern California that is- sued fraudulent paperwork enabling foreigners to stay in the country and netted as much as $6 million a year. Hee Sun Shim, 51, of Bev- erly Hills; and Hyung Chan Moon, 39, and Eun Young Choi, 35, of Los Angeles, were arrested on a 21-count indictment, the U.S. attor- ney's office said in a state- ment. Authorities said stu- dents from South Korea and China who were pre- viously enrolled elsewhere transferred to Prodee Uni- versity and related schools but never attended classes, paying up to $1,800 for a six-month enrollment to get fraudulent paperwork in support of their student visas. Federal investigators said they were tipped off af- ter inspectors made an un- announced visit to Prodee in 2011 and saw only one class in session with three students, though records showed hundreds were en- rolled. "We had students who were hundreds, thousands of miles away," said Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of homeland secu- rity investigations for Im- migration and Customs Enforcement in Los Ange- les. "There was absolutely no education going on at the school." It was not immediately clear whether the defen- dants had attorneys who could respond to the alle- gations. They were due to make their first court ap- pearance Thursday. No one answered at two phone numbers listed for Prodee University. Federal authorities have been cracking down on schools they say solely op- erate to help foreigners pro- cure student visas. Last year alone, immigration author- ities flagged 150 of some 9,000 schools certified to accept foreign students for investigation, many of them in California. Government watchdogs have said the recent fraud cases exposed gaps in im- migration authorities' over- sight of schools that admit foreign students In this case, authorities are in the process of strip- ping Prodee and affiliated schools' ability to enroll for- eign students. Students will be allowed to return to their countries or present legiti- mate documents to support their visas, Arnold said, adding that some would re- main as material witnesses in the case. The school created fake Los Angeles-area addresses for foreigners to use on their paperwork and fabricated attendance records and transcripts on their behalf, according to a copy of the indictment. In exchange, the defendants charged "tuition" and told foreign- ers to lie to immigration of- ficials and say they attended classes, court papers said. Authorities said Moon and Choi worked for Shim. All three face conspiracy and fraud charges. Shim is also charged with en- couraging illegal residence and money laundering, the statement said. Mild air will hold from the mid-Atlantic to the Midwest with unseasonably warm conditions continuing over the Plains with sunshine. An area of drench- ing rain is forecast to expand from the Gulf Coast to the middle Mississippi and Tennessee valleys. Some of the rain will be heavy enough to cause flash and urban flooding. As the rain moves into the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians late this week, more widespread stream and river flooding could occur.
