Sigma Phi EPSilon P.O. BOX 427 MANHATTAN, KS 66505 addrESS SErviCE rEqUEStEd t h e H O O P o f S T E E L T he most difficult day-to-day situations that a Fraternity may experience are communication and accountability. Kansas Beta is no different than other chapters when it comes to dealing with these issues. Instant communication does not necessarily make things more clear and can (and has) lead to misunderstandings that can fester and cause inter-chapter conflict. Accountability is a little more difficult to manage and control. As Chapter advisor, my part in the communication process is to listen to the needs and wants of the members. Sometimes it's observing behaviors and trying to understand why something was done a certain way. My part in member accountability changes as the level of responsibility changes. As Chapter advisor I cannot make members accountable, but I can be a catalyst in helping the men realize that commitment and follow-through are very powerful traits in influencing others and increasing leadership abilities. One of the benefits of my position is that I get the opportunity to impact the thinking of young men in the Chapter. I also get to interact with many men that come from different backgrounds and have different interests. I have been very thankful for the men in the Chapter that have taken on new responsibilities because they believed the Chapter could be better. These men have shown accountability and have made a positive difference in how the Chapter operates. Our challenge is to continue to get everyone in the Chapter to take responsibility and ownership to make Kansas Beta one of the best houses on campus. The new Chapter president, Tyler Struckhoff '16, is committed to the principles of the Balanced Man philosophy and has the Chapter thinking differently about how things are done. We continue to have a strong involvement from our housemother, Mrs. Jean Reiter. She has proven to be a great asset in the daily operation of the Chapter House. She is organized, is able to keep the men pointed in the right direction, and has many talents. Hardly a day goes by without someone coming to her to fix a torn pair of pants or needing urgent help editing an English paper. Kansas Beta has a lot to be thankful for. We have a nucleus of well- rounded men in the Chapter, we have an excellent group of leaders, and we have freshmen that will soon become actives. With everyone's help we will become a better Fraternity. Like most fraternities we also have challenges. We constantly need to recruit and attract men that embody the principles of the SigEp Balanced Man. We need to maintain a clean house environment that promotes academics and social well-being. I am confident that the Chapter is headed in the right direction and I look forward to working with young men that want to get better.
