KanSaS BEta A s the spring semester begins, it's easy to sense the excitement and enthusiasm for Chapter involvement. Carlson Leadership Academy took place in Oklahoma City in February, and through the help of Scott Jury '86 we had the most attendees in the region with 17 members. Attendees this year included an unprecedented 14 members of the freshman class, all who have expressed interest in future leadership positions. This will be beneficial to those running for positons later this semester and in turn will provide strong leaders for the next few years. Brothers Look Forward to Spring Events Changes in the fall paved the way for exciting events and new opportunities this spring. The Fraternity will be moving away from its usual Sunset Revival philanthropy in pursuit of providing greater service and financial benefits within the community. Last year a group of brothers became the top fundraising team at the Polar Plunge event to benefit Special Olympics. Our goal this year is to retain that title and set the bar a notch higher in both participation and donations. Another main focus of the spring semester, Dad's Day, will also experience changes in 2015. Due to the current stadium renovation, the Spring Football Game will be moved to Sporting Park in Kansas City. We're looking forward to working with the Mom's Club on an eventful weekend to incorporate this change. Recruitment to Broaden Focus The executive board will head to Lincoln later this semester for a weekend of collaboration with Nebraska Alpha at the University of Nebraska. This will provide members from both universities the opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and allow for improvement at each chapter. Recruitment is always a main focus in the spring, and our chairmen are looking forward to signing a large class from all over the state of Kansas and beyond. They have a specific focus on heading west and recruiting members from outside of our usual confines. We are excited to bring back a part of the Chapter that has faded in recent years, to develop ties all over the state again. Alumni Always Welcome Please feel free to reach out to the recruitment chairmen or me with suggestions of young men that could benefit our brotherhood. We'd like to ask all of you to stop by the house anytime you are in town. We enjoy the opportunity to meet brothers and alumni of such a great Fraternity and university. Fraternally, Tyler Struckhoff '16 Chapter President (970) 481-9124 tstruck@ksu.edu Brothers raised the most money of any team as a part of Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. Much of the Chapter gathered to partake in Christmas dinner prior to finals week. Chapter Looks to Further Community Involvement, Continue Excellence through Recruitment Through a Mother's Eyes House Mom Jean's View on the State of the Chapter I am Jean Reiter, the house mom for Kansas Beta in my fifth year. It has been a real joy to be surrounded by my handsome, smart, and charming SigEps. I am not sure of all the changes that have happened over the years, but these young men still are trying very hard to do their best. I find Greek life is different than the 1960s. First, they do not play cards, have pinnings, or formal serenades. However, they have date parties and try to meet girls all the time. Some things are the same: intramurals are still very competitive, and we are always near the top and win most of the time. Football, basketball, and soccer are our most successful events. Special events are Parents' weekend, Mom's and Dad's weekend. Special dinners include scholarship meals at which the men receive a check for grades over a 3.5, a manners meal conducted by Mr. Pesci, and our graduation meals when we say a tearful farewell to our seniors. We still have a full-time cook while others have gone to a food service. Sandy is excellent. The AVC is extremely important to us. They guide the men and take care of so many details. Chapter Advisor Pat Pesci '91 is the rock of support in directing education, keeping the house in repair, and guiding the men toward the future. The men still do duties at the Chapter House and most of them do it willingly. This year we bought new furniture for part of the formal room and the men thoroughly enjoyed watching the Royals and other games as a group. We also received a beautiful grandfather clock from the McCullum family that displays the SigEp crest on the pendulum. As you can imagine new items are appreciated, but this is truly special. The scrapbooks from the past give these men a sense of brotherhood with the men, like you, who have walked through these halls before them. Alumni really need to understand they enjoy meeting you. I know right now they really need some connections to help recruit throughout the state. That is an emphasis this year. Please, please take time to stop by the house when you are in Manhattan.
