NEWS OF THE WEIRD by CHUCK SHEPPARD "My ultimate dream is to be buried in a deep ocean close to where penguins live," explained the former Alfred David, 79, otherwise known in his native Belgium as "Monsieur Pingouin" (Mr. Penguin), so named because a 1968 auto accident left him with a waddle in his walk that he decided to embrace with gusto. (His wife abandoned the marriage when he made the name change official; evidently, being "Mrs. Penguin" was not what she had signed up for.) Mr. Pingouin started a penguin- item museum that ultimately WEEKLY HOROSCOPES BY HOLIDAY For the week of Nov. 13. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You've experi- enced moments of connection, when you feel like a person really understands you and relates to who you are. These moments illuminated your inner world, making you feel alive on every level. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) People close to you sometimes disappoint you by proving they really don't know you. You still long for someone to understand you and relate to who you are on the inside. The best way to fi nd this person is to take measures to know yourself well and act to make yourself happy. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) You're such a pas- sionate, deeply feeling person that sometimes you're afraid to let yourself experience certain emotions. Most strong feelings don't last long at all. Let the feeling happen, and it will cleanse you. Chuck Sheppard totaled 3,500 items, and he created a hooded, full-body black-and-white penguin outfit that, according to a September Reuters dispatch, he wears daily in his waddles around his Brussels neighborhood of Schaerbeek. [Reuters, 9-29-2011] Inscrutable Asians Though South Korean children score among the highest in the world on standardized reading and math tests, their success comes at a price, according to an October Time magazine dispatch. They supposedly suffer "educational masochism" — punishing themselves by overstudy, especially in high school, preparing for university admissions tests (a process so competitive that even test-coaching schools are picky about accepting students). Earlier this year, to curb the "masochism," the government began enforcing a 10 p.m. curfew on coaching-school activities, and in Seoul, a six-man team conducts nightly after-hours raids on classes that run late-night sessions behind shuttered windows. (Ironically, Time acknowledged, American educational reformers want U.S. students to study harder, like Asians do, but Asian reformers want their students to relax, like American students.) [Time, 9-25-2011] In America, the quest for perfectly straight teeth can lead to orthodontia bills of thousands of dollars, but in Japan, a dental "defect" — slightly crooked canine teeth — makes young women more fetching, even "adorable," say many men. Women with the "yaeba" look have canines pushed slightly forward by the molars behind them so that the canines develop a fang- like appearance. One dental salon, the Plaisir, in Tokyo, recently began offering non-permanent fixtures that replicate the look among straight-toothed women. [CNN, 9-30-2011] COPYRIGHT 2011 CHUCK SHEPHERD WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CANCER (June 22-July 22) It's important to get out of your environment regularly. This broadens your perspective and allows you to take things less personally. Instead of labeling a mood as "your life," you will be able to see it as passing weather. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You've seen dogs who enjoy traveling in a car. They don't mind traffi c and seem to enjoy every bit of the journey as a big, free adventure. You'll feel equally unfettered this week after you drop a burden, fulfi ll an obligation or are cut loose of a responsibility. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You're in a positive mood from the start and can take advantage of this by writing a list of things that make you smile, bring you enjoyment or give you the feeling of being safe and comfortable. Then you can read the list later in the week when your busy schedule will pose a bit of a challenge to your winning attitude. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Just because you sometimes get carried away by the moment doesn't make you characteristically fl ighty. As long as you honor your word, the detour will make a positive contribution to your life and work. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) You dream of a world very different from the one you now experience. And yet still you'll see the wisdom in fl owing with today's currents. Besides, you'll be able to do more good from inside the mainstream. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might worry that you didn't say the right thing or that you came across as under-confi dent. Maybe you regret that you didn't think things through. Suc- cessful people take risks and go with their gut. They don't always have time to think it through. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You'll see the necessity for negotiating to reach a mutually ac- ceptable arrangement, but you may have trouble participating personally in this negotiation. That's what mediators are for. A knowledgeable, wise and impartial third party will help everyone get what is fair out of a deal. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Ease in your life will start with ease in your mind. But you are dealing with so many different obligations, opportunities and responsibilities that unless you make an effort to calm and clear your mind, it won't happen. Meditation will help. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You'll be learning again this week, and the new territory you cov- er today is potentially lucrative. Listen well, and don't be timid about asking questions. A good teacher should be able to adapt to your pace. Sometimes it will take longer, and other times you'll speed ahead. Do what's comfortable. My boyfriend and I never get sick of each other. We respect each other and are there for each other, and we talk very openly, even when we're upset. His ex-girlfriend is part of our group of friends. She is thin and very pretty. I know I'm attractive, but I'm struggling to lose those 10 pounds I put on in college. Also, she's super-sweet, and she and my boyfriend broke up because he cheated on her. He told her right away and felt sick about it for a long time, so I'm not worried that he'd cheat on me. Friends tell me how much he loves me, and he even told me he'd feel Amy Alkon "lost" without me. Still, I get nervous when they're alone or talking a lot. I haven't said anything about her being around so much, but I know other girls wouldn't stand for it. — Jealous It would be easier if she fit the stereotype of the gorgeous girl with the tiny lump of coal heart. Unfortunately, she's sunshine with legs (sickeningly long, slim legs, with no hint of cankles). Making matters worse, they had an indiscretion- driven breakup, not an "I'm sick of you" breakup. Whatever could be stopping him from scampering back to her? Well, it doesn't sound like you're exactly a barker, and although men prioritize looks in women, once you're within the zone of what a guy finds hot/cute/sexy, other stuff comes into play: Are you kind? Does he feel needed, appreciated, understood? Do you click as a couple — naked and clothed? And okay, you aren't on the short list to be an Abercrombie model, but is every day more fun because you're in it? Don't let on how jealous you feel (it sends a message that you're not all that), and don't try to control a man by telling him what to do (it leads to resentment, secretiveness, and rebellion). You tell a man what to do by making him happy and by being happy with him. Your relationship may eventually end, but if you accept that, you can enjoy the hell out of it while you have it. For peace of mind, start a conversation about what you appreciate about each other. Listen up and you might get your head around the notion that he's with you because he's "lost without you" — and not because he lost his directions to the skinny girl's house.
