ByDallasDubke Someofyoumay have seen a picture of the Bible prom- inently displayed on the cover of Jan- uary's Newsweek. Inside was Eichen- wald's article, "The Bible: So Misunder- stood It's a Sin." Eichenwald, under the guise of neutrality, trashes the credibility of the Bi- ble. He cites the "works of scores of theologians and scholars." Upon closer look you will not find balanced theologians and schol- ars but only those who re- peat the mantra, "Scrip- ture has been re-written and changed and altered so many times that the Bi- ble is unreliable." Absent from Eichenwald's article are those who hold many credible arguments to the contrary. Again I was reminded that no book has been so constantly attacked, banned, burnt, despised, or challenged as has the Bible, yet it continually rises above the rest. Archeology has time and again vindicated the Bible in the face of its naysayers. Although space here does not per- mit a deep look at all the details, places and peo- ple once thought to be fictitious keep coming to light with the turn of a spade. The famous yet skeptical historian, Sir William Ramsay, af- ter thirty years of explo- ration and study, finally came to the conclusion that, "Luke [a biblical au- thor] was a historian of the first rank; not merely are his statements of fact trustworthy…this author should be placed along with the very greatest of historians." Further, one could look to the wonder of the Dead Sea Scrolls; hidden away in a cave for some 2,000 years, they came to light again in 1947. The Scrolls have preserved copies of most of the Old Testament as well as containing frag- ments of every Old Testa- ment book except Esther in Hebrew. These were written about 1,000 years ear- lier than previ- ous extant He- brew copies. Was there alarm amongst bibli- cal scholars be- cause of the hypothetical changes and modi- fications that some claim happened over the years? Were these ancient books vastly different than their more modern coun- terparts? On the contrary, there was amazement re- garding their reliability. As for the New Tes- tament, has it been re- worked over time through the years of its trans- mission from one gen- eration to another? Is it trustworthy? Unlike, the game "telephone" where what is heard and said be- comes amusingly changed, it must be remembered the New Testament is a written document, care- fully copied letter by let- ter for the next generation. There are more than 5,686 known Greek manuscripts, not counting over 10,000 Latin manuscripts plus. Recently, fragments from copies of the Gospel Mark and John have been found dating from 100-150 AD. Think about it; the Apostle John, author of the Gos- pel named after him, died sometime after 98 AD. He would not have tolerated a changing of his Gospel or that of the others while alive. No other document of antiquity even begins to approach the numbers of ancient manuscripts that attest to the New Testa- ment. The closest, Hom- er's Iliad, is second with only 643 manuscripts that survived, dating from the 13th century. On top of that we have the writing of the early Church Fathers (100- 300 AD), Christian lead- ers following in the footsteps of the origi- nal Apostles of Christ. Through their writings, scholars have stated that, even without the original manuscript, to- day's New Testament could be reconstructed. Let no one deceive you through the select quotes of biased "experts." There is no credible reason to be- lieve today's New Testa- ment to be unreliable. On the contrary, as a book of antiquity, it rises itself head and shoulders above any other book as to its ve- racity. It is proper to call the Bible Holy, not only in its being God inspired but also in its message, a mes- sage uniquely set apart from that of all other reli- gious "holy books." Though written over the course of 1600 years by statesmen and fisher- men and farm laborers, it proclaims one central message. It brings a mes- sage of grace and mercy through God coming to be with us. Unlike religious books, it is not a "recipe" on how to reach God by doing or thinking or feel- ing or praying. The Bi- ble speaks of God coming to mankind not through a prophet but in the per- son of His "only-Begotten Son, that whoever trusts in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 Centuries ago Voltaire said, "One hundred years from my day there will not be a Bible in the earth ex- cept one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity seeker." Well, Voltaire, in spite of the Eichenwalds of our so- ciety, the Bible remains a source of encouragement, comfort and confidence to more people than ever. For those of you who have questions and are willing to set aside the oft repeated platitude that the Bible is not credible, I would suggest a look at Josh McDowell's book, "The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict."
