Ontheair By Greg Beacham The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Ronda Rousey spent a year as a bartender after she turned 21, partying every night and wondering what to do with her Olympic bronze medal in judo. When she first saw mixed martial arts on tele- vision, her friends warned her away. This complicated new cage-fighting sport was too violent, too primi- tive, too unregulated. "That just made me re- ally want to try it," Rousey said with a laugh. Six years later, Rousey is nothing less than the face of the UFC, the young sport's dominant promo- tional company. She has never lost a fight, reign- ing as the bantamweight champion ever since the UFC finally began pro- moting women's bouts two years ago. Rousey has become an actor, a model, a celeb- rity endorser and one of the world's most promi- nent female athletes dur- ing her meteoric rise, but she realizes she hasn't done it alone. Women's MMA is surging in prominence with Rousey at the fore- front, and the sport gets its biggest showcase yet this weekend when two wom- en's fights will headline a UFC card under the Holly- wood spotlight. "The women are a force in this sport," Rousey said. "They don't need anybody's help to sell the sport. They sell themselves to the fans, and the thing about wom- en's MMA is that it brings new fans into the sport as well. They don't just bring the traditional fans. When the women are featured in MMA, a lot of people tune in who wouldn't pay any attention to us otherwise. We're an attraction." Rousey defends her belt against fellow unbeaten star Cat Zingano in the main event of the pay-per- view UFC 184 on Saturday night from Staples Center in Los Angeles. Even more significantly, the penul- timate fight on the card showcases the MMA debut of Holly Holm, a champion boxer expected to be Rous- ey's next big rival, against veteran Raquel Penning- ton. Rousey has headlined UFC cards before, but her fights have always been supported by big-name men's bouts. Women are carrying a UFC pay-per- view show for the first time, and the fighters are thrilled by the latest milestone. "I feel like women's MMA is at a point now, you almost can't ignore it, and I think that it's great," Holm said. "I think that's what the athletes deserve. They work just as hard and train just as hard as the men. These women have skill. It's not just a cat- fight out there. The more that people watch it, the more people are even get- ting into it because they start to really see what these girls have." UFC 184 Rousey leads women's MMA surge recreated his inner mono- logue while looking at a re- play. "See, I don't remember any of this," said Duffy, as he watched himself slide across the plate. "I feel I blacked out from halfway home till I high-fived ev- erybody. ... Wait, can we see that again? Was Flan waving me? I want to see if Flan was waving me." Yes, in fact, third base coach Tim Flannery was waving Duffy home. It's of- ten a rookie mistake to fail to pick up your base coach. Duffy was anything but in- attentive, though. His fo- cus was locked on Cardi- nals catcher Tony Cruz as right-hander Trevor Rosen- thal's 3-2 pitch to Joe Panik skidded in the dirt and glanced off the catcher's backhanded stab. The ball popped away over Cruz's left shoulder. His first motion was to look over his right shoulder. "When I saw him look the wrong way, that's when I decided to go," Duffy said. Duffy had a huge sec- ondary lead of 10 feet as Rosenthal went into his de- livery, according to MLB Statcast tracking tech- nology. With his angular body leaning forward like a hungry cheetah, Duffy accelerated to full speed in 1.76 seconds and he never hesitated as he rounded third base. Even with an athletic recovery by Cruz, Duffy beat the throw to the plate. Duffy credits his off- season work with a speed coach, who taught him how to run efficiently and put him on a program to strengthen his core and hip flexors. He began working on improving his speed as a sophomore at Long Beach State, but didn't have the time to dedicate himself to the program until he be- gan playing pro ball. Along with improved accelera- tion and an extra step on defense, Duffy also noticed he was generating more bat speed at the plate because his hips were able to fire so much faster. Of course, no amount of speed training can sub- stitute for quick thinking, and Duffy's sharp instincts were on display more than once in that ninth inning after manager Bruce Bochy sent him in to pinch run for Andrew Susac. Duffy was leading off second base with one out when Gregor Blanco hit a line drive to the left side. Duffy was about to break for third base when he remembered an offhand comment that fellow rookie Adam Duvall had made earlier in the day, noting that shortstop Jhonny Per- alta was taller than he re- alized. "I don't know why," said Duffy, "but in the moment the ball was hit, that's what went through my head: 'Oh yeah! Peralta's huge.' Sure enough, he reaches up and catches it. The thing I'm most proud of was holding up on that line drive." Giants FROM PAGE 1 Tempers flared after Golden State's Festus Ezeli pushed Toronto's Tyler Hansbrough in the throat after they tangled under the basket with seconds remaining in the third. Hansbrough responded by chasing after Ezeli, shov- ing him and throwing a punch that failed to con- nect. Both players received double technical fouls and were ejected. "It's not something I should bother myself with, somebody like that," Ezeli said about Hansbrough, who has a reputation for agitating opponents. Raptors coach Dwane Casey considered Hans- brough's angry response "a positive" on an other- wise negative night. "I was glad to see some- body ready to hit some- body," Casey said. Terrence Ross scored 18 points and DeMar DeRo- zan had 14 for the Raptor. They matched their longest losing streak of the season with their fourth straight defeat. "We were kind of soft, too soft," Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas said. Golden State was among the teams to beat Toronto in its previous four-game skid, from Dec. 30 to Jan. 8. That stretch also included losses at Phoenix and Port- land, and a home defeat to Charlotte. Forward Patrick Patter- son replaced Amir John- son in the starting lineup, but the change did noth- ing to boost Toronto's of- fense. The Raptors shot 1 for 19 in the first, missing their final 16 attempts and setting a record for the worst single-quarter mark in team history at 5.3 per- cent. "For us to hold them to one field goal in a 12-min- ute span is pretty cool," Curry said. Toronto's previous worst was a 1-for-15 performance in the fourth quarter at In- diana on Nov. 13, 2012, a game it won 74-72.
