As any budding musician will tell you, getting your music 'out there'
is the key to moving from one level to the next. The problem is, no one
really knows where "there" is. By simple definition, there is everywhere
but here.
One solution will soon be returning to this part of North Carolina.
After a few years' hiatus, WCLN-107.3 is introducing "Indie Artist
Spotlight" in April. The weekly 30-minute radio show will introduce a
large and eager audience to artists and their music in an engaging for-
mat on and off air.
Revisiting an earlier version of the show called "Local Artist
Spotlight," the new format will include unsigned talent from across the
country as well as local talent. Being honest with ourselves, we discov-
ered one of the greatest problems was the lack of artists with a quality
recording of their work. In short - the pool of genuinely local artists
quickly ran dry. There is no shortage of independent artists, however.
We receive dozens of hope-filled song submissions each month from
new artists looking for a way to break in, as well as established artists
looking for a comeback.
The upside to the situation is that WCLN is able to build a platform for
local artists to stand on, while drawing from a deep pool of talent to cre-
ate a solidly entertaining radio show. Shows will be compiled and made
available online as podcast pages, which will be shared with our many
listeners and music industry connections, giving each episode plenty of
life well beyond its one radio slot.
How do local artists get involved? Easy. Submit your music for review.
The best way to tip the scale in your favor is to include everything you'd
send in a Press Kit. We have plenty to choose from on any given day,
and only 52 weekly slots each year, so anyone submitting should care
enough to send their very best. Let us know if you're playing churches,
music halls, coffee shops, festivals – whatever. We just
might take a field trip to hear you live.
