TAU KAPPA EPSILON q BETA ETA CHAPTER q MISSOURI S&T q SPRING 2015 BETA ETA DATA Ensure Beta Eta's Legacy at MS&T Donate Today to Make an Impact on Future Fraters T he excitement around the new Chapter House plan is at an all-time high. We want to thank everyone who has contributed financially to the Pride in Our Past, Securing Our Future campaign. To date we have raised $809,942 toward our $1 million goal. We have made great progress with our fundraising, but we need to increase participation to ensure the Chapter is on a solid financial foundation. So far, 164 Fraters, or 21%, have made a commitment to the campaign. With the average participation rate among Greek campaigns being around 25%, we know we can do better. Fraters, the next step is yours. It is up to us to make this dream a reality. We must meet our $1 million goal to guarantee we can complete the project as planned. If you have been considering a gift to the campaign, please consider these reasons to send in your gift today: • We know you want to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. • Many Beta-Eta alumni have taken advantage of our convenient five-year pledge program to maximize their giving potential. • Any donor who contributes $2,500 or more will have his name listed on a plaque in a prominent area of the new Chapter House. • If you know of a Teke who has not stepped forward with a gift, encourage him to make a pledge immediately. The need is huge, and the time is now. Please don't wait; use the enclosed pledge form to make your pledge to Beta Eta today. Yours in the Bond, Michael McEvilly '78, BH615 Campaign Chairman mmcevilly@hess.com PRIDE IN OUR PAST, SECURING OUR FU TURE T he phrase "distance makes the heart grow fonder" has proven true for Thomas McElyea '69, BH359, who recently retired from a 21-year career as director of engineering and construction for Sid Richardson Carbon and Energy Company in Fort Worth, Texas. Although he has found it difficult to stay in touch with many Beta Eta Fraters, he saw the capital campaign as an opportunity to reengage with the Chapter. "I live far away and was unable to make trips back to Rolla. This is a way to financially catch up," he said. Tom moved to Texas after graduating in 1972 from Missouri S&T with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. For his first four years out of school, he worked for Texaco in Port Arthur, Texas. While there he earned a master of engineering degree from Lamar University in Beaumont. His career took him to Jacobs Engineering in Houston, where he then became a licensed engineer in the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and New Mexico. He provided supervision of engineering and construction contractors on projects, including plant expansions, steam turbine generators, and efficiency improvements, before beginning at Sid Richardson Carbon and Energy Company. Beta Eta was influential in Tom's career by teaching him to get along with and work with individuals from different backgrounds. He encourages undergraduates to "get a wide background in engineering courses within your major and develop written and presentation skills." The sense of belonging and "being part of a winning team" are some of Tom's favorite memories of his time in the TKE Chapter House. By supporting the Pride in Our Past, Securing Our Future campaign, Tom is happy to, "provide future Tekes with the same opportunities that I had," he said. He encourages alumni to remember their time in the house and the rewards the fraternity has bestowed upon them. "Supporting a new house will be a lasting contribution for future members," he said. Tom is enjoying retirement in Fort Worth and spends his time playing golf and gardening. You can contact him at tem@att.net.
