2A Daily News – Tuesday, October 25, 2011 Community people&events Weight Watchers turns weight loss pounds into pounds of food Special to the DN Weight Watchers Leader Kandie Gallant-Walden and Major Frank Severs of The Salvation Army have partnered for the fourth year to help feed the Red Bluff Community. "Our loss is their gain," Gallant-Walden said. "While Weight Watchers members are losing weight, they are bringing in pounds of non-perishable foods for The Sal- vation Army Food Bank. The 2011 Lose For Good Campaign was held Aug. 28-Oct. 15." During the seven-week period, Red Bluff Weight Watchers members lost over 780 pounds and will be donating over 700 pounds of food to the Salvation Army, she said. Major Frank and his staff will be picking up the food at Weight Watchers, 485 Antelope Blvd., on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Anyone interested in donating non-perishable food items can do so by bringing items by the Red Bluff location or taking them to The Salvation Army, 940 Walnut St. Weight Watchers will continue to collect food items through the holiday season. Since 2008, Weight Watchers has donated $3,000,000 to anti-hunger groups, Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger. Weight Watchers members throughout the country have conducted more than 3,000 local food drives, donating 1.4 million pounds of food and have celebrated a total of 4 million pounds of weight loss. Beef Shish Kabobs from Light Cooking with Beef 1 1/2 pound Beef Top Round Steak (London Broil) 1 red pepper, cut into chunks 1 green pepper, cut into chunks 2 large tomatoes, quartered 1 small onion, quartered 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon oregano leaves 1 bay leaf 1/4 teaspoon salt freshly ground pepper 6 eight inch bamboo skewers Trim excess fat from steak; cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes. Thread beef cubes on skewers alternately with red and green pepper chunks. Place remaining ingredients in food processor or blender; process until smooth. Pour over kabobs and cover. Refrigerate, turning occa- sionally, at least 3 hours, no longer than 24 hours. Cook kabobs over barbeque grill 4 inches from medium-hot coals, 6 minutes per side for rare or until desired doneness. Baste with mari- nade during cooking. October is the seventh birthday of California HEAT Chorus. This women's barber- shop chorus was chartered in October 2004 and is a part DOWNTOWN RED BLUFF BUSINESS ASSOCIATION'S starting Oct. 30th OPEN SUNDAYS 8am - 2 pm 607 Main St., Red Bluff Mon-Sat. 6:30am-3pm 527-0772 of Sweet Adelines, Interna- tional. The organization has 30,000 members in 11 dif- ferent countries. Five women had a vision of what they wanted their chorus life to be and what they dreamed of accom- plishing through education, coaching and learning to be good singers. They searched for a place to locate and decided Red Bluff would be the perfect town. Everyone has fallen in love with this community. When the chorus goes to competition once a year, they are proud and excited to hear the competition master of ceremonies say, "Contes- tant from Red Bluff, Califor- nia, the California HEAT Chorus." The chorus has 23 mem- bers and is eager to grow. Women who are 15 and older are welcome to attend a rehearsal, sing on the risers or just to come and listen. It's a warm and inviting place to sing and you will hear a lot of laughter as the chorus practices the songs. You will hear everything from jazz to standard bar- bershop, all sung in four-part acapella harmony. You will hear chords that ring and create a physical sensation that is unique to this style of music. California HEAT rehearses Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Metteer Elementary School in Room 26.
