Pastor John Bohrer invites all children and their families to attend. Church news? e-mail: clerk@redbluffdailynews.com or Fax: 527-9251 The Pew Research Center study released just in time for Fathers' Day contains both good and challenging news. The good news is that fathers in traditional families spend 250% of the time they spent with their kids in 1960. The challenge is that those in nuclear families are below fifty percent of American households. The good news is that men who have chosen to make and keep a commitment to family are doing just that. The better news is that – in repeated studies dating from the Reagan through Clinton years – their kids are less likely to become involved in crime, drugs, poverty, and broken families themselves. They are more likely to enjoy success in many dimen- sions of that concept. The bigger challenge is that fewer men seem willing or able to make that com- mitment in the first place, and the consequences of non-commit- ment are just as well documented. The study knocks a few stereo- types into a cocked hat. One sec- ular myth is that the more educat- ed a person the less likely he will hold traditional values. But the reverse is true. From within the fairly narrow parameters of the study it is revealed that only 13% of college educated men are sir- ing children out of wedlock. The figure climbs to 51% for the high school-only educated, and to 65% for school dropouts. Three quar- ters of fathers aged twenty to twenty-four have children out of wedlock while that percentage drops to 36% for those aged thir- ty-five to forty-four. Well, duh. If you are a father under twenty-five in this culture you are probably not married. Another secular myth is that most people know how other people are thinking and behaving. Yet this study shows the public about evenly split between thinking the average dad is more or less involved with his kids than in the previous genera- tion. We need to get out more and discover every- body is not just like us – on both sides of the equation. Traditional biblical fam- ilies – at least in paradigm – really are the best equipped to produce healthy, productive, and well socialized children and adults. Studies of co- habiting before marriage were conducted at the Uni- versities of Wisconsin, Houston, and others twen- ty-plus years ago. In near identical results they demonstrated the risk of divorce or termination of relationship in couples who co-habited before marriage was four times that of couples who lived together first as husband and wife. Meanwhile multiple studies authored by liberals and conservatives from that era and earlier made it proverbial that the best way to avoid poverty and crime, and assure healthy social adjustment, academic success, and prosperity in children was for their parents to marry before their birth. Don't get me wrong; the Bible is full of dysfunctional families. David is no paragon of parental integrity after the rape of his daughter, Tamar, by one of his sons. On top of that the King of Israel is a polygamist who has one of his best friends killed because he lusts after the man's wife. But the model held up in scripture and commended by God is consistent and insistent that a man should leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife (Genesis 2:24 and Mark 10:6-9) that they may become one flesh. The Lord commends the perma- nence of the marriage covenant in James Wilson GodTalk Malachi 2:14-15 and again – through Jesus – in Matthew 19:7- 9. The formula for a happy marriage grounded in mutual sacrifice in Ephesians 5:21-33 is just as foundational for covenant living between God and mankind. The mea- sure of the Word of God has never been how well we measure up to it, but how con- sistently God adheres to it when He speaks. But things really do go a lot better when we aim at the target instead of at whatever we would like to believe is better. We live in a season dedicated by the Lord – in the words of Luke 1:17 – to turning the hearts of the fathers to the children prior to His return – whenever that may be. Not everyone is able to live in a nuclear family, and there should be no judgment on those who don't – whether the cause is divorce, widowhood, or poor decisions – whether fault or no fault. But our culture is clearly poised to recover to its roots, and just as ready to keep doing what it has done the past half century while expecting a different result. It is up to us with eyes to see to cheer, facilitate, and choose the culture of life that is our birthright if we will receive it. King David turned to God and so can we. James A.
