LETTERS TO EDITOR
Dear Editor:
Hooray for Bill Bowman! His Publisher's Pen article in the Dec.
17-23 issue of the Up & Coming Weekly
hits it right on the head of the nail. We
need Sanderson Farms to improve our
economy, put 1,100 unemployed folks
back to work and realize that the $134
million investment will sit on land that
the Cumberland County folks bought
15 years ago. It is a win-win situation
that is hampered by "What ifs:" possible
property loss, odor, feathers and
contamination. Has anyone checked the
other sites to see it these "What ifs" are
"real"? I'm certain our elected folks have
done so.
Just think about the 1,100 folks who
will go back to work. I realize that $15 an
hour is better than $11, but $11 is a hell
of a lot better than $0. Common sense
tells me that The House of Raeford has
survived with flying colors and this is a
great opportunity for us. We want new
businesses in our area, but telling them
we will pick and choose from those who
come begging to set up shop in our community is the kiss of death.
Every politician says he or she does not believe in politics. They
"work" for the people who put them
in office. I remember one member of
our city council telling me that 200 are
against this development that will affect
some 350,000 in our surrounding area. I
think the county commissioners and our
city council should be able to realize that
these 350,000 folks will remember them
in 2016. Bill pointed out seven specifics
in his article that every politician
should consider when they discuss and
vote on this major improvement to our
community.
Bill laid it out in simple terms and
asked each of us to call our elected
officials. I did that personally this
morning, and it didn't take too long
to say my piece. Let's just hope that
this offer doesn't "Go to Roost" before
Sanderson Farms says good-bye.
