We've done it! We've collectively crossed that magical line that invokes
thoughts of a fresh start, promises of a brighter future, and at the very
least, sends us on the hunt for a new calendar.
Personally, I'm not a resolution-maker. Sure, I have a list of things I hope
to accomplish in the near future. Some of the items even have detailed
steps I plan to follow to reach the goal attached. But I always have a list.
So turning the page on a brand new year merely gives me a new number
to work with.
Surely you've had some thoughts about what 2015 should hold for you
by now. If not, or if you want to add a thing or two, consider making the
leap beyond dreaming and into doing. Here are some fun things to do
which may lead you into something new and exciting depending on your
personal experience:
1) Sing in public. You do it all the time in the shower. Your neighbor
told me. Make your way to one of many open mic nights in Fayetteville.
Bring a guitar, or a friend with a flute or something. It'll be a blast!
2) Dive into local history. Fayetteville has far more to offer than some
will ever realize. Visit the Transportation Museum or The Museum of the
Cape Fear, which is actually a collection of wonderful "staycation" day
trips for family, friends, or school outings.
3) Discover alternative entertainment. The Gilbert Theater is a unique
experience you will definitely want to tell a friend about. And be sure to
check out one of the movies or music events at the Cameo Art House in
downtown Fayetteville.
4) Get creative. There are several area locations that offer one-night
excursions into painting, pottery and other creative arts. Walk in with a
friend, and walk away with a piece of art and a sense of accomplishment.
Many allow you to bring your own picnic with you!
5) Smell the roses. Fayetteville Technical Community College has a
beautiful Rose Garden. Take a camera and a friend for a truly memorable
experience.
6) Get fit and have fun. Just minutes from where you're sitting, you
could be hiking, jogging, walking, or cycling in premier spots like Raven
Rock Park, Cape Fear River Trail, or Linear Park. Look 'em up! You can
thank me later.
Fayetteville is a great place to call home, and if you take the time to
uncover its secrets and play it right in 2015, it can become a place you
learn to love. For the first time, or all over again.
Happy New Year!
