ByJanieMccauley The Associated Press SANTA CLARA San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York is tired of the legal troubles involving his team, hinting Monday that the standards slipped under former coach Jim Harbaugh while pointing the blame at everybody involved including himself. As the off-field problems and arrests mounted, Harbaugh stood and spoke for the fran- chise each time — exactly how the front office wanted it. He handled the tough questions and all the mundane day-to- day dealings in between. The 49ers had 10 arrests in- volving six different players since January 2012, most in the NFL. "There are things that I didn't necessarily like — Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, that you don't speak more loudly on because you win," York said. "And that's my failure. There were things that in conversations that we had, I know what my gut was. And we had conversations and we did things that prob- ably didn't jell well with who I am. And I would rather do the things that we need to, but stay at the level of class that I expect of the San Francisco 49ers. And this isn't shooting at Jim and saying, 'Jim made all these decisions.' I want you to clearly hear that." Broadly referred to as "phil- osophical differences," the is- sues between York and Har- baugh ultimately were too great to maintain a winning relationship. That is York's take on what transpired anyway. He and general manager Trent Baalke addressed Harbaugh's depar- ture a day later in what the owner reiterated was a "mu- 49ERS DIFFERENCESLED TOHARBAUGHSPLIT MARCIOJOSESANCHEZ—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh watches from the sideline during the first quarter of an NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals Sunday in Santa Clara. Rudy Gay had 25 points and DeMarcus Cousins added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Kings, who've lost 13 of their last 17 games. Brook Lopez came off the bench and chipped in 11 points for the Nets, who bounced back from a 25-point loss to Indiana on Saturday night at Barclays Center and won for the fourth time in their last five games. The Nets led 93-83 with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter after a layup by Deron Williams, but Gay then scored five straight points in a 26-second span, including a 3-pointer, that cut the lead to 93-88 with 5:12 to play. The Lady Spartans faced a tough opponent in a Modesto Christian team ranked by Max- Preps as one of the Top 100 girls basketball teams in the country. Modesto Christian led 25-2 af- ter the first period and held Red Bluff to single digits in each quar- ter. Red Bluff (3-4) was scheduled to play Del Oro Monday. GIRLS BASKETBALL Spartans routed by Modesto Christian By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA Tony Sparano won over the locker room and changed the mindset of the Oakland Raid- ers in 12 games as interim coach. That garnered him widespread support in the locker room de- spite getting only three wins. Whether it proves to be enough for him to keep the job next sea- son will ultimately be up to owner Mark Davis. Sparano wrapped up the sea- son Monday by holding a brief team meeting with his players and then emphatically stating his case for keeping the job in a sea- son-ending news conference. "All I want to do right now is be the head coach of the Raiders," Sparano said. "How badly? Very, very badly. This is my team. I left my team today. I'm looking for- ward to starting over again with them. Those decisions will be made down the road. I only have one concern now and that's to be head coach of the Oakland Raid- ers." Sparano appeared to be talk- ing to Davis as much as anyone during the news conference. He cited the spark he has with his team, the improvement following the firing of Dennis Allen in Sep- tember and the 27 first- or second- year players who participated in more than 10,000 plays this sea- son. "I'm confident. I know the di- rection this is headed," Sparano said. "I've done this before, not quite like this. I've got a lot of work done right here. I want that work to be for me, for this orga- nization." Sparano will get the chance to talk directly with Davis when he interviews for the job shortly. Da- vis will also interview other can- didates but big names like Jim Harbaugh and Jon Gruden are no longer options. Sparano and the players also talked about the importance of continuity, citing the eight head coaches and more than 100 assis- tants Oakland has had in 12 sea- sons since last going to the play- offs in 2002. Defensive end Justin Tuck, one of the many proven veter- ans brought in this offseason to help instill a winning mindset in Oakland, said he hopes that there will not be major changes on the coaching staff. Tuck, who won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, said the Raiders are not as far away from becoming a winner as most outsiders might think. "We're not far off," he said.
