DECEMBER 24-30, 2014 UCW 11 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Nursing is a noble, formidable and rewarding career. Providing compassionate, caring and competent delivery of healthcare to a growing population is more than a job; it is a career and a new way of life. Fayetteville Technical Community College, established in 1961 as Fayetteville Area Industrial Education Center, became Fayetteville Technical Institute in 1963, and became known as Fayetteville Technical Community College in 1988. Through the Associate Degree Nursing program, the college offers determined, committed and capable individuals an opportunity to enter the workforce as registered nurses. FTCC's ADN program offers our community a greater opportunity to achieve an optimal state of health through the preparation of future nurses. The ADN program received initial accreditation in 1970 by the National League of Nursing Accreditation (currently known as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing- ACEN). FTCC's ADN program maintains full approval by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. As the future dictates, the newly registered nurse must be able to respond to the needs of patients in a holistic and timely manner using critical thinking. Critical thinking is characteristic of those entrusted by the public to provide and assist in healthcare. In order to facilitate the transition of college students into nursing professionals, the North Carolina Community College System adopted a curriculum improvement project that resulted in changes in community college nursing education across the state. Community colleges have embraced education in nursing through concepts rather than by various disease states. The driving force of an improved curriculum is an ongoing process to promote currency in healthcare within an ever-changing discipline. Consumers of healthcare deserve to receive current, proficient, holistic care that encompasses all phases of the individual, in a manner that demonstrates quality attributes of a registered nurse. A concept-based curriculum offers the cultivation of critical thinking needed to care for persons regardless of medical diagnoses. Instruction in concept-based curriculum involves the facilitation of education to adult learners. Understanding and applying health concepts enables the nurse to respond to patient-care needs based upon the astute ability to recognize alterations in the patient's health status. Associate Degree Nursing students at FTCC are immersed in preparation to care for others by becoming active learners in nursing and are encouraged to take ownership of the educational processes. Students are expected to come to the program prepared for active engagement in the classroom, laboratory, or clinical settings. FTCC offers the Associate in Applied Science degree program in Associate Degree Nursing to qualified applicants yearly. The deadline for application to the program is Jan. 30 of the year in which the prospective nursing student wishes to begin the nursing program. The ADN program begins in the fall semester and is completed within five semesters. The ACEN accreditation signifies the exemplary standards of this program and promotes the values and attributes necessary of the new graduate nurse applicant. The preparation and instruction students receive in this program are designed to teach learners how to think critically as a nurse in order to serve their communities in providing positive client outcomes.
