D NEWSAILY RED BLUFF TEHAMACOUNTY T H E V O I C E O F T E H A M A C O U N T Y S I N C E 1 8 8 5 ALAMEDA (AP) — Almost from the moment he arrived at train- ing camp, Oakland Raiders rookie receiver Denarius Moore dazzled his new teammates with his frequent highlight reel catches. He backed that performance up with a strong preseason and then really got noticed nationally with a breakout game in a losing effort against the Buffalo Bills last week. Moore caught five passes for 146 yards, including a 50-yard leaping touchdown grab over a pair of defenders that gave the Raiders a lead late in the fourth quarter that the defense was unable to hold. ''I feel pretty good with what I've been able to do coming out here in practice and transfer it to the game,'' Moore said Wednesday. ''Coach says practice like you play, so that's basically what I've been doing.'' That's exactly what Moore did last week in Buffalo, making the same kind of catches he did all sum- mer in training camp in Napa, just on a bigger stage with a bigger audi- ence. His big day started when he took away a ball from cornerback Leodis McKelvin for a 20-yard catch on the first play of the second quarter to set up Oakland's first touchdown. He beat McKelvin again late in the first half for a 42-yard gain down the sideline to set up the touchdown that gave the Raiders a 21-3 lead. He added a 10-yard catch and 25- yard reverse early in the fourth quar- ter to help the Raiders move back on top 28-24 before coming up with his biggest play of the game in the clos- ing minutes. With the Raiders at midfield trail- ing 31-28 with less than 4 minutes to go, Moore went deep and was cov- ered by McKelvin and safety George Wilson. But Jason Campbell threw the ball up anyway and Moore made sure it worked out. He out- leaped both defenders for the ball, coming away with what is for now his signature catch. ''It was one of those trust issues,'' Campbell said. ''You see him get- ting behind the safety and you know he's going to be pretty much one on one with the corner. Guy went up and got the ball at its highest point and made a play for you. Around the league, you always see guys making plays and that's exactly what he did — he made plays. ... As a quarter- 7 p.m. Sports Panthers Chico Red Bluff Spartans Friday 7:30 p.m. Chico: 2-1; last week lost to Nevada Union 32-21. Red Bluff: 0-3; last week lost to Corning 41-13. Last 3 Meetings 2010: Red Bluff 20, Chico 48 — Chico QB Trevon Reid was out with an injury, but Peter Wysong stepped up in his place, going 13--for-19 with 193 yards and two touchdowns to Jesse Holmer. Jamiel Hardman added 162 yards on the ground with three touchdowns and Ger Lee added two more rushing scores. Red Bluff was led by wide receiver Ty Smith, who caught five balls for 101 yards, including a touchdown from Cody Case. Gage Grabfelder also scored for the Spartans. 2009: Red Bluff 19, Chico 22 — The Spartans twice had the lead, but both times couldn't hold on. Red Bluff went up 12-0 early behind run- ning touchdowns from Austin Wobbe and Scott Avery. Chico switched to the Wildcat and the Spartans had difficulty containing Jamiel Hardman, who rushed for 304 yards and a touchdown. Backfield mate Ian Boyer had two scores and 78 yards. Red Bluff regained the lead in the third quarter when Cory Lyon found Taylor Hickson on an 18-yard touch- down catch, but Hardman led the Panthers back for the winning score. Ian Hill had an interception for Red Bluff. 2008: Red Bluff 35, Chico 7— Following a Zack Schwabauer inter- ception, Collin Ramirez found the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the first half and the Spartans never looked back. Ramirez finished 8-for-14 with 204 yards through the air and a touchdown to Cole McKenzie. Schwabauer added two rushing touchdowns. Panthers' Scouting Report Considered a team on the rise entering the season, the Panthers' sealed that reputation with a strong performance against a highly touted Nevada Union team last week, after back-to-back wins to open the season. Chico quarterback Trevon Reid injured his left knee in the season opener against Lassen — a game the Panthers won with a blocked extra point. Reid returned last week and is one of the more dynamic players in the section. He is extremely hard to bring down with his combination of speed and agility. Spartan killer Jamiel Hardman has graduated and taking over as the primary back for Chico is Vince Allen. Mark Jorgensen, who blocked the extra point against Lassen, will also see time in the backfield. Jorgensen also plays on the defensive line and is a standout wrestler — think Dylan Reid skill set. The Spartans are not the only team wide out Jesse Holmes has given fits too and he's back as an aerial threat. Aaron Chu and Stefano Disano also catch passes for the Panthers. Return man Kamare Jackson has returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns this season. Redding Christian Lions Cardinals Corning Shasta Wolves Last Year 2010: Shasta 63, Corning 7— Shasta's offense was stopped twice all night — when the first half ended and when the game ended. Clay Cavender rushed for two touchdowns and threw two more before being rested as the Wolves crushed Corning. John Lowe had the lone Cardi- nals' score a 79-yard touchdown run. Wolves' Scouting Report Fortunately for Corning, Clay Cavender has graduated and the Shasta offense doesn't look to be as explosive as it has been recently. Still, Avery Holley is a solid running back and quarterback Chris Collins can beat teams with his legs or arm. Shasta will also look to get the ball into the hands of playmaker Steven Johnson, who is also dangerous on special teams. Collins and Trevor Short are the linebackers to watch in Shasta's 4-4 system. PV's line is green with just one starter, Sheldon Waterhouse, returning from last season's team. After last year's thrashing, the Cardinals will come into this game with plenty of motivation and even a bit more experience with its offensive line and skill positions. Warriors Mercy Friday 7 p.m. Mercy: 1-1; lost 3 weeks ago to Champion Christian 53-14 Shasta: 0-2; lost 2 weeks ago to Champion Christian 28-24 Lions' Scouting Report Redding Christian is in the midst of its inaugural 8-man football sea- son, while Mercy gets going on its second. Both teams have had a couple weeks to prepare for this one. Redding Christian has the advantage in bodies, with a 23-man roster, something that can't be overlooked in the 8-man game. They are led by Hayden Piper. At quarterback, Piper has went 11-for- 30 with five interceptions. He's also their primary ball carrier with 26 car- ries for 230 yards. Nick Allen also gets rushing attempts. Piper is the primary kick returner and a standout on defense. The Lions alternate between a 3-2 and 4-2 defensive front and have a strong defensive line anchored by Matt Prins. Wideout Erik Hovland is also a factor on defense.
