6 UCW NOVEMBER 4-10, 2009 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM F CUS On Leaf Season Begins FAST Adds Route, City Departments Assist with FEED Fayetteville Two City of Fayetteville departments assisted 1,800 participants Oct. 27 at FEED Fayetteville, an annual event that promotes homelessness prevention. The Fayetteville- Cumberland Human Relations Department and Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) supported this year's event, which fed and provided clothing, medical screenings and flu shots to participants at the Salvation Army Shelter on Alexander Street. FEED stands for Faith Communities Enjoying Evolved Human Development. Over 100 volunteers from 21 non-profits and the VA medical center assisted with the day's activities. Free transportation to and from the event was provided by FAST. The FEED Fayetteville Committee and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Homeless Stand Down partnered with other local non-profits and churches to make the community service effort possible. Gary Belton, left, of Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations, and Patti Fortuna, vice chair of the Human Relations Commission, distribute canned goods to FEED Fayetteville participants. The City of Fayetteville is set for the annual loose-leaf pickup season. Round 1 pickup runs from Nov. 25 - Jan 11, 2010. Round 2 of loose leaf season comes later in 2010. Hangtags will be placed on household trash cart-handles for citizens to view easily and take inside for reference. A recommended place to keep the hangtag is on a refrigerator. Leaf season allows for unbagged leaves and pine straw to be picked up curbside. Citizens should follow these instructions: • Rake leaves and pine straw curbside by day prior to pickup date • Place leaves and pine straw on the top of the curb away from storm drains and out of the road • Leaves and pine straw only - no tree limbs. Citizens are reminded that bad weather may cause delays. Residents do not have to wait for loose leaf season to have their leaves and pine straw collected. The Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) has undergone many improvements in the last two years and more changes are taking place in November. The bus system is extending hours on some routes and adding another route. Beginning Nov. 2, route 9 will start; routes 6, 9, 12 and 14 will be extended for three hours into the evening; and routes 15 and 16 will run a solid schedule with no mid-day stoppage as they now have. "We are making improvements based on the needs of our riders and citizens," FAST Director Ron Macaluso said. "These service changes will provide our customers with a better product." Route 9 acts like an east-west connector for route 6. The route makes stops along Shaw Mill Road, Rosehill Road, Stacy Weaver Drive, Ramsey Street, Country Club Drive and at Methodist University. Route 9 also features extended hours. "By having extended hours, routes 6, 9, 12 and 14 will provide better access and more opportunities to get to shopping areas and support citizens who have to work late," Macaluso said.
