Corning's offense supplied big plays, the defense was stellar and the Cardinals steamrolled Red Bluff in the fourth quarter to a 41-13 victory. It was Corning's largest margin of victory against Red Bluff since 1987. Since the two schools started playing again in 1983, Corning has won 20 of the 29 meetings. "We were really resilient," said Corning coach John Studer, who moved to 3-0 in Shootout games. "They came at us real hard early and we struggled offensively — we got a little bit lucky and popped a couple of those big plays." The first of those big plays came late in the first quarter when quarter- back Ryan Holland got the entire Spartan defense to bite on a run to the left, before breaking for the right edge and outrunning everyone on the field for a 77-yard touchdown. Corning would miss the extra point. The teams exchanged intercep- tions from there with J.D. Whited picking off a pass for Corning and Cody Case grabbing one for Red Bluff. Case's pick gave Red Bluff the ball on Corning's 20-yard line. While a penalty would push the Spartans back, Red Bluff got on the board when their new kicker Niklas Ericsson booted a 40-yard field goal to make the game 6-3. However it didn't take long for Corning to respond with another one of those big plays. On third-and- seven Holland found John Lowe wide open in the middle of the field with no Spartan safeties back. Lowe took off and raced for a 66-yard touchdown reception. "Coach Studer told me that was my play, so when I heard it called I knew I was going to score," Lowe said after the game. Trailing 13-3, Red Bluff switched quarterbacks and junior Garrett Sandow came into the game under center. Sandow found Garrett Spangler on a 42-yard pass play to put the Spartans within Ericsson's kicking range again. This time Ericsson hit a 45-yard field goal, to wow those in attendance and made the game 13-6, where it stayed headed into half- time. After the Spartans' fumbled the second half kickoff, most of the third quarter was played in the Red Bluff end. The Cardinals' kept push- ing for a score to break the game open, but the Spartans' defense kept holding. Finally with 12 seconds left in the third, Corning broke down the Week 3 Scoreboard Week 3 results Corning 41, Red Bluff 14 Anderson 20, Las Plumas 0 Bonanza 14, Etna 0 Central Valley 40, Oroville 0 Chester 54, Burney 6 East Nicolaus 42, Biggs 7 Enterprise 36, Antelope 35 Esparto 25, Kelseyville 7 Eureka 18, Shasta 13 Foothill 22, Lassen 20 Hamilton 28, Durham 26 Live Oak 34, Gridley 21 Mt. "We didn't really have any rhythm offensively and the defense just kept us in the game," Studer said. Corning's defense did just that as Red Bluff's first three possessions of the second half netted negative 8 yards. A Cody Long sack of Sandow just as the third quarter was ending, rushed all of the momentum to Corning's side and when the Cardi- nals touched the ball in the fourth quarter they needed just two plays before Whited busted a 54-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals senior finished the game with 140 yards on 15 carries. Whited said last week's embar- rassing loss to Orland was just as much motivation as the rivalry with Red Bluff. "Coming off Orland, we did pret- ty bad that game and all we were thinking about was how we could come out the next week and come out strong," he said. The Cardinals certainly closed out Red Bluff in strong fashion. After Whited's second touch- down, Holland ended a Spartans' drive with an interception inside the red zone. Corning marched the ball right back down the field and Mikey Sim- cox took it in from 9-yards out to add a touchdown to his night that also included kicking five extra points. The Cardinals forced Red Bluff four-and-out and then marched down the field again, this time it was Nathan Fultz taking it in from 1- yard out to make it 41-6. Red Bluff scored one final time with 33 seconds left in the game when Tucker Gulliford finished off a drive he created with a six yard run.
