4B Daily News – Monday, September 19, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Plane that crashed had camera, video possible RENO, Nev. (AP) — A World War II-era plane had a video cam- era facing outward, and memory cards were found at the scene where it crashed near a grandstand in Reno. It raises the possibility of video of the crash that killed nine, including the pilot. Investigators with the NTSB said Sunday the cards will be ana- lyzed to see if there is any footage. Before it crashed, the aircraft also sent information to the racing team crew including oil pressure and temperature, altitude and velocity. That information could help investigators determine what caused the plane to crash. Officials said they have heard reports the pilot sent a mayday call before crashing. They said so far there is no evidence of a call. The plane hit the first few rows of VIP box seats like a missile Fri- day, causing a crater roughly 3 feet deep and 8 feet across with debris spread out over more than an acre. Yemeni forces open fire on protesters SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemeni government forces opened fire with anti-aircraft guns and automatic weapons on tens of thousands of anti-government pro- testers in the capital demanding ouster of their longtime ruler, killing at least 26 and wounding dozens, medical officials and wit- nesses said. After nightfall, Sanaa sank into complete darkness after a sudden power outage, as protesters took control of a vital bridge, halting traffic and setting up tents. Thou- sands of other protesters attacked government buildings and set fires to buildings they said were used by snipers and pro-government thugs. The attack was the deadliest in months against protesters and comes as tensions have been esca- lating in the long, drawn-out stale- mate between the regime and the opposition. The president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, left for Saudi Arabia for treatment after being severely wounded in a June 3 attack on his palace, raising hopes for his swift removal — but instead, he has dug in, refusing to step down. The protest movement has stepped up demonstrations the past week, angered after Saleh deputized Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to negotiate a power-transfer deal. Many believe the move is just the latest of many delaying tactics. At the same time, greater num- bers of the powerful Republican Guards force, led by Saleh's son and heir apparent Ahmed and armed regime supporters have also been turning out in the streets in recent days, raising fears of a new bloody confrontation. Magnitude-6.9 earthquake hits northeast India GAUHATI, India (AP) — A strong earthquake shook north- eastern India and Nepal on Sun- day night, killing at least 16 peo- ple, damaging buildings and send- ing lawmakers in Nepal's capital running into the streets. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9, struck at 6:10 p.m. local time and was felt across northern and eastern India, includ- ing in the capital of New Delhi. It triggered at least two aftershocks of magnitude 6.1 and 5.3, Indian seismology official R.S. Datta- treyan said. He warned more after- shocks were possible. At least five people in India's Sikkim state were killed and more than 50 were injured, according to the state's top official, Chief Sec- retary Karma Gyatso. The north Indian state of West Bengal reported four deaths, and Bihar state reported two. Nepal's gov- ernment said five people died and dozens were hurt there, including two men and a child who were killed when a brick wall toppled outside the British Embassy in Nepal's capital, Katmandu. The full extent of damage was not immediately known because the region is sparsely populated with many people living in remote areas now cut off by mudslides triggered by the quake, state police Chief Jasbir Singh told The Asso- ciated Press. TV stations reported buildings buckled, sidewalks cracked and two major roads collapsed in Sikkim's state capital of Gangtok, 42 miles (68 kilometers) southeast of the quake's epicenter near the border with Nepal. The Indo- Tibetan Border Police said two of its buildings had collapsed in Gangtok. Obama to offer deficit package WASHINGTON (AP) — Even as President Barack Obama prepares his opening bid on long- term deficit reduction, the White House wants to keep the focus on jobs and is determined to avoid getting sucked into another budget fight with lawmakers. Administration officials see the task of attending to deficits as nec- essary but not necessarily urgent, compared with the need to revive the economy and increase employment. The White House also sees this as the time to draw sharp contrasts with congressional Republicans, whose public approval ratings are lower than Obama's. As a result, when Obama announces at least $2 trillion in deficit reduction measures Mon- day, he is not expected to offer all the compromises he reached with House Speaker John Boehner, R- Ohio, in July before those talks broke off. ''I would view this as the pres- ident's vision for how we achieve deficit reduction, which makes it inherently different than the sorts of legislative negotiations we were undertaking with the speaker over the summer,'' said the White House communications director, Dan Pfeiffer. Tensions between Perry and Bush camps AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Here's the still-beating heart of the rift between Texas Gov. Rick Perry and his predecessor, George W. Bush: When Bush was gover- nor he refused to appoint Perry's brother-in-law to the Texas appeals court bench. With Perry now running for president, the spotlight is shining on the tense relationship between the two Tex- ans and their allied camps. In public, both Perry and Bush shrug off any friction. ''Between the Bushes and Rick Perry there is absolutely no rift at all,'' Perry recently told conserva- tive radio show host Sean Hannity. When Bush was asked in a sep- arate interview about it, he men- tioned Karl Rove, one of his most trusted advisers, and said: ''Maybe with Karl. Not with my brother, with my dad, not with me at all. I admire him.'' Despite all the niceties, Perry didn't hold back when asked dur- ing a recent Republican debate about Rove's comments that Perry's 2010 book ''Fed Up!'' contained such explosive lan- guage that it could be ''toxic'' in the general presidential election. Strauss-Kahn admits to 'moral failings' PARIS (AP) — Dominique Strauss-Kahn broke his silence four months after a New York hotel maid accused him of sexual assault, calling his encounter with the woman a ''moral failing'' he deeply regrets, but insisting in an interview on French television Sunday that no violence was involved. Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund and a one-time top presiden- tial contender in his native France, also denied using violence against a French writer who claims he tried to rape her in a separate 2003 incident. Throughout what appeared to be a heavily scripted 20-minute- long interview with French broad- caster TF1, Strauss-Kahn man- aged to come off as contrite even as the Socialist politician insisted he hadn't forced himself on either of the women. He said his May 14 sexual encounter with Nafissatou Diallo, an African immigrant who claimed that he attacked her when she entered his room in Manhat- tan's Sofitel hotel to clean it, ''did not involve violence, constraint or aggression.'' Still, he acknowledged, it ''was a moral failing and I am not proud of it. I regret it infinitely. I have regretted it everyday for the past four months and I think I'm not done regretting it.'' 'Don't ask, don't tell' repeal will be big relief NEW YORK (AP) — After 19 years hiding her relationship with an active-duty Army cap- tain, Cathy Cooper is getting ready to exhale. On Tuesday, the policy known as ''don't ask, don't tell'' will expire. And Cooper will dare speak her love's name in public. ''This is life-changing,'' said Cooper, choking up. ''I just want to be able to breathe — knowing I can call my partner at work and have a conversation without it having to be in code.'' Much has been reported about the burdens that ''don't ask'' placed on gay and lesbian service members who risked discharge under the 1993 policy if their sexual orientation became known in the ranks. There's been less attention focused on their civilian part- ners, who faced distinctive, often relentless stresses of their own.
