W hile going through recruitment, it's not always easy to see which chapter you will fit in with or who could become your friends. The thought of joining an organization where your membership lasts for a lifetime is a bit overwhelming to most college women. Nonetheless, you find a chapter that feels like home, and women you met just the day before suddenly feel like sisters. First you were a part of it, and then it became a part of you. What attracted Melissa Vanatta Hamby '90 to Alpha Omicron was how genuine the members were during recruitment. She felt a connection with many sisters and felt at ease during each visit. Her favorite memories are of her sisters and the friendships they formed which turned into lifetime bonds. "One of my favorite memories was recruitment my sophomore year. Garth Brooks had just released his first album and I have fond memories of listening to 'Friends in Low Places' while setting up and tearing down decorations," Melissa said. Melissa moved back to Stillwater in 2000 and chose to volunteer with the Chapter because she was so close to the university. She never imagined that 14 years later she would still be an advisor. "Meeting sisters of all ages is what keeps me going as an alumna volunteer. I have been fortunate to be part of Alpha Omicron's rise from being a struggling Chapter to becoming a high-functioning organization. "One of my goals is for Alpha Omicron to win the coveted Golden Lion Award in 2017. I also hope to see the Chapter move up in the academic standings on campus. My final goal is to convey to current members how worthwhile it is to volunteer as an alumna. We are fortunate to have many former members advising at a variety of chapters and serving as international officers and Executive Office staff. I want members to appreciate that Alpha Delta Pi is more than a four-year experience." Being an alumna volunteer has helped Melissa connect with older and younger sisters. She feels fortunate to be part of a strong advisory board. "Our ritual has a deeper meaning for alumnae especially as it applies to life in the working world. Staying involved leads to a deeper appreciation of the vision of a group of young women who started our organization more than 150 years ago." Melissa works at The University School at The University of Tulsa, a private school for gifted children where she developed the K-8 science curriculum. She is also working on earning a Ph.D. in Education Leadership and Policy Studies. She and her husband, David, have two ADPi legacies, Lauren (14) and Rachel (8).
