When he looks back on his undergraduate years, Ed remembers strong camaraderie in the chapter house and a healthy competition between the Beta Theta Pis. "When I was in school, we occupied what became the Alpha Gamma Rho house that was across the street from the Beta house. Once, in the middle of the night, a few fellow Phis planted garden seed on the Betas freshly plowed front yard. The Betas were not happy come springtime when a wild onion, radish, cucumber, and lettuce crop appeared." In addition to his strong friendships and social life, MO Alpha and the University of Missouri provided Ed with leadership skills and a good education. He served as chapter president two semesters and graduated with a B.S. B.A. in business administration. Ed began his post-collegiate career as an army artillery lieutenant in Korea followed by a two-year stint working at an advertising agency in St. Louis. An eleven year career followed with Dictaphone Corporation, culminating as New York City district manager. That experience preceded a return to St. Louis as a 35-year owner of a Management Recruiters "head hunter" franchise. Being one of the founders of the Mizzou Tiger Club-St. Louis led to an invitation that resulted in being the eight- year chairman of the Mizzou Alumni association athletic committee beginning in 1981. This exposure led to becoming the national president of the MUAA in 1989. One of the things of which Ed is most proud is suggesting a move from the original MUAA Gustin golf course building location to the planned south quad and what is now the Reynolds Alumni Center—where it could be near the very center of all campus traffic and activities. Feeling a deep sense of gratitude for what he received while he was a student in Columbia, Ed has always stayed involved with the university and rarely misses a football game. "I think Mizzou is an even better academic institution than it was when I was there. I would advise all undergraduates to look at college as creating the resume for the beginning of their competitive career life. Make the most of it. The more activities in which you engage provide the more opportunities you have for leadership. I highly suggest taking as much public speaking as you possibly can. You will need that skill set no matter what field you are in. A basic logic course is not a bad idea either." Ed keeps in touch with many pledge brothers. Recently Jerry Case '56, John Hammond '56, Wayne Rector '56, and Ed met for dinner in October. He and his wife, Irene, affectionately called "Saint Irene" by Ed's pledge class brothers, live in St. Louis, Missouri. "I don't know whether loyalty starts in the heart and transfers to the head, or starts in the head and then transfers to the heart… but it doesn't make any difference as long as it happens."
