Thru November Operation Hero Comfort plans Annual Silent Auction for the Troops By Joanne Winer This year is a very special year for the military as they honor those who fought and lost their lives in Vietnam 50 years ago. The loss of so many young men and women during times of war has al- ways been a very sad time for anyone who has served or had family members who served or just anyone who shows their respect and honors anyone from the military who puts their lives on the line every day to give us the freedoms and liberties we have today. Many of our brave young men and women are now serving in the mid- dle east, mainly Afghanistan, and al- though some are coming back home soon, hopefully, there are many who are still serving their terms there and still need our support. Operation Hero Comfort has been in operation since 2006, when Doc and Anita Carlson started their non-profi t organization to send packages to the troops who are in harm's way anywhere they are needed. Over the past years, hundreds and hundreds of packages are going out from Quartzsite to these adopted units, and the troops who received them have been so grateful for them- -sometimes just getting something from home makes things a little bet- ter for them when they are so far away from their loved ones. The packages are sent twice a month, two to each unit--one food items and one non-food (books, magazines, sta- tionary, toiletry and health/hygiene items, etc) and Anita often gets re- sponses from the troops thanking the volunteers for all their time and efforts to help them. She has also received many fl ags that have been fl own by these units, and gotten many certifi - cates of thanks also. The Silent Auction is held every December to raise money to help buy needed items and to pay for the post- age to get them over to the troops. Each package is over $14.00 and funds are always needed to keep up with every- thing, so this auction is a great fund- raiser to go to since they get over a hun- dred items to auction off, and there is also a 50/50 drawing and door prizes. Refreshments are also available to any- one who attends. This summer, Operation Hero Com- fort lost one of its founding members, when Joe Winslow passed away after a terrible battle with brain cancer. He was a vital part of Operation Hero Comfort and also worked tirelessly at VFW and the Animal Shelter as well as helping many others. He will be very sadly missed by those of us who knew and cared for him, and a special tribute will be made at the auction to honor his contributions to the troops and to Quartzsite. If you have some items to donate for the auction, or if you have any items that can be put into the packages to send to the troops, please contact Anita Carlson at 763-639-9330 There will also be a box at the event to put things in for the troops, along with Christmas cards to sign to put into the next pack- ages sent out before Christmas. Come on out to the Community Center on December 13, 1-4pm for a great time and show your support for our troops!!
