Then all day Saturday and Sunday morning they would locate a shady spot, form a ring, place a blan- ket in the center, and with three Span- ish decks of cards (8's, 9's, and 10's removed from a 52-card deck) they played Conquion, a form of Rummy known as Coon-Can. The men played with the dimes and gave the nickels to the women for their game. Win or lose, Sunday afternoon everybody went home happy as they joked about being the big winner next Sunday. In 1915 Bill met and married Jes- sie Leah Conner (Buck Conner's sister), settling in Quartzsite where they operated the Beacon Hotel (near today's McDonald's restaurant). Bill continued to work his mining inter- ests while passing on his knowledge of potential mining opportunities in Southwestern Arizona. vices. At these locations, Little Falls Dolostone is exposed at the surface, and removal of the overburden by the mining company makes it accessible. Mining Herkimer Diamonds requires breaking the hard dolostone to reach pockets, or vugs. Most vugs will con- tain hydrocarbon and druzy, some will contain dolomite crystals or other min- erals, and many, but not all, of them will yield the prized Herkimer crystals. For more information on the Herkimer Diamond Mines, and to purchase Her- kimer Diamond specimens and crys- tals, come to RocksInMyHead. We have gorgeous specimens of Herkimer Diamonds in the Dolostone Matrix as well as individual crystals. We have a large selection of rocks, fossils, miner- als, and gemstones. The building was a total loss, and thanks to RJK Construction and John Smith and crew, the roof was taken down from around the power pole, and the insides were secure enough to get all the con- tents out before the whole structure came down. Once the building was empty, Roy and his crew moved it off the site so the new trailer could be placed. Thanks to Mark Orgeron and Doyle Thompson (construc- tion fi rm from Ehrenberg) along with Everett's Towing, the build- ing was put into place and secured down. Roy's crew also put in new subfl oors and tiles, air conditioner, and sliding door. as well as re-plac- ing the ramp and steps. Many people came by and of- fered to help where they could. A very special thanks to Quartzsite Rotary, Quartzsite Community Thrift Store, La Paz Regional Hos- pital, Kym Scott of Tyson Wells, and First Assembly of God Church who all donated funds to help get the materials needed to remodel the trailer to make it useable. Vol- unteers who helped with the clean up, and setting up the offi ce were John and Cheri Prutch, Paul, Tony, Cee and Vinnie Carnevale, Joanne Winer, Dee Ellis, Sandy Scott and Marie Wister. They all contributed so many hours to get things done. A special thanks also to Quartzsite Emporium for donating and mak- ing the screens for the windows and door, and to Jim Kirk, owner of Hi Ali, for giving free rent for a month. Horizon Community Bank printed a lot of show schedules for the Chamber to get them going until their printers were hooked up again, and Doug and Dinice Ross helped put up and cleaned all the plastic containers around the walls. Phil Bates also donated some of the containers. Ralph and Pat Brown donated a laptop for us, also. A special thanks also to Norm Simpson, who had his employee Dennis Asher come over and paint the whole outside of the building and ramp. He did a great job and it looks wonderful!! A lot of people have commented on the turquoise and how much they love it--inside and out!! The Business Chamber is now open from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and they hope everyone will stop by and see the new improved offi ce and say hello. The Business Chamber lost most of all the fl yers, business cards and brochures during the deluge, so any member business should bring some by next time they are in the area so the pockets can be refi lled again for all the hundreds of visi- tors we will be getting the next few weeks into the busy season. Any organization who is having an event can also bring by fl yers and they will be posted and given out as well. There is still a lot of work to be done to get the back offi ce and storage area fi nished, and some landscaping done, but the main thing was to get the front offi ce going since the winter visitors are already coming back and looking for all kinds of information. The board and volunteers of the Busi- ness Chamber would like to thank everyone who made this transition possible, and please be sure to drop in and say hello--they are gearing up for the Santa's Workshop Arts and Crafts Festival and the Christ- mas Light Parade coming up soon. Applications are now being taken for both events, and you can pick them up during business hours or call and get them mailed to you. The Craft Festival is November 29 and 30 and there are still spaces available, and the Light Parade is December 6--start thinking about putting a fl oat or lighted entry in and be part of a great Christmas tradition with refreshments at Town Hall after the parade and trophies for many categories--you may win!!! For further information about these or other events, or any infor- mation you need about Quartzsite or the activities, please call them at 928-927-9321.
