This acoustic show will certainly be a sell- out, and not just because Shasta County loves to turn out to support its most famous resident. The PIckin' Singin' Sto- rytellin' concert tour also marks the first time these two legendary singer- songwriters have per- formed together, turning this appearance into a rare, historic moment to see two of country music's biggest stars share the stage and let their hair down. Kris Kristofferson has an unusual resume. Texas-born, football star and Golden Gloves boxer in college, Rhodes scholar at Oxford, Army captain and chopper pilot, studio janitor, part-time bar- tender, leading man oppo- site Barbara Streisand and Jane Fonda. But on his passport, under occupa- tion it reads songwriter. And that, more than any- thing, sums up the essence of Kris Kristof- ferson. You can thank Shasta County's own Merle Hag- gard for electric country, 'cause he invented it! An original "Outlaw," Hag- gard is one of the most influential singer-song- writers of country music history. He's recorded more than 600 songs (about 250 of them his own compositions), had 40 No. 1 hits, and his "Today I Started Loving You Again" has been recorded by nearly 400 other artists. Arts & entertainment Haggard, Grant top Cascade bill North State Symphony celebrates 10th anniversary The North State Symphony celebrates a decade since the Chico and Redding Symphonies merged in 2001 with its season-opening concert, The Future Begins!, a program fea- turing works by Beethoven and Stravinsky. Concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 in Chico's Laxson Auditorium and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 in Redding's Cascade Theatre. A pre-concert talk for the Chico performance begins at 6:30 p.m. in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall. The Redding pre-concert talk is at 1 p.m. at the Cascade Theatre. "The Future Begins!" features New York pianist Diane Walsh playing Beethoven's "Fourth Piano Concerto." Walsh has performed with symphony orchestras from San Francisco to Berlin. She has been featured frequently in the play "33 Variations," by Moisés Kaufman, during perfor- mances in Washington, D.C., on Broadway and in Los Angeles. The play is based on the last year in the life of Beethoven, and also inspired Ms. Walsh to record Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations." SPORT PILOT Pickett will lead the North State Symphony in "The Rite of Spring," by Igor Stravinsky. This famous piece, written for a ballet, caused a scandal at its Paris premiere. The power- ful music has always impressed listeners, even without the ballet's sexually provocative choreography. Music Director Pickett described the concert as, "the per- fect way to celebrate the launch of our second decade. This music is beautiful and bold. What could be better?" Later concerts in the North State Symphony's 2011-12 season, in November, December, February and May, will feature photography by Ansel Adams and North State young people; Holiday favorites including Messiah high- lights; more Beethoven; and classical guitar music.
