A large percentage of our flower power has decreased. Now we can appreciate the remaining bright spots that are left in our garden beds. These warriors have persisted against drying winds and the scorching sun. Aside from our always reliable annuals are our hardy perennials such as the Black- eyed Susans, the blanket flowers, greggri sages, verbena, cannas and coreopsis. PATH Walk and Celebrate Recovery have joined together to raise awareness and funds at the River Park, Saturday, Sept. 17. PATH Walk registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the Walk will begin at 10 a.m. Walkers will head north on Main Street to Walnut Street and back to the park. After the PATH Walk, Celebrate Recovery will host a free barbecue, music by Roy and the Bigguns, kids' events, booths and much more. The event is designed to celebrate the success of treatment and recovery with all the community. Contact Patrice Tamp at 527-7893 for more information. PATH is excited about the Walk this year because an anonymous donor has pledged to match up to $20,000 of everything raised at the Walk. The money will go to help fund the future shelter. They are definite stand- outs in your flower borders. They literally glow in their yellow and gold rays surrounding their promi- nent central cones. A must have flower for any September garden. The blanket flowers are a delight with their daisy-like flowers in yel- low, scarlet and bronze. My favorite is 'Mesa Yellow' which I think is the most floriferous of all of vari- eties. Mine have been flowering since February. I have them com- more. 'Tropicanna Gold' has leaves striped in green and gold. The flow- ers are yellow-orange with orange speckles. These plants need to be divided about every three years so you will have plenty to share with friends. bined with light pink geraniums and neon rose verbena. The greggri sages come in bright bold colors and flower summer through fall. They are dependable perennials which get to be 1-4 feet tall and wide. They contrast nicely with the Black-eyed Susans and coreopsis. Verbenas are fast growing ground covers. They love hot tem- peratures and thrive on our valley floors. They can also be used in containers and hanging pots. They come in many colors and can be combined easily with the other hardy perennials to create harmony or contrast. Cannas are another tough peren- nial coming in many vibrant colors in varying sizes. Some have showy variegated leaves which compli- ment the large bright flowers even Coreopsis is another hardy perennial which also blooms pro- fusely from summer through fall. It's smaller flowers come in shades of gold, orange, red and maroon. Some flower petals sport multi col- ored patterns. They tend to self-sow and the birds like their seed heads. To see these flowers up close be sure to attend the Tehama District Fair Floriculture Department. There will be a vast display of cut flowers to see and you can pick out your favorites to place in your own gar- den. Feel free to ask the Red Bluff Garden Club staff any questions you might have. Corning seniors celebrate Labor Day Courtesy photo The Corning Senior Center hosted almost 90 seniors with family and friends gathered together Monday to celebrate Labor Day. The ham luncheon was a senior center fundraising project to help off-set the expense of running the center. The Corn- ing Senior Center is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with senior nutrition being served daily for a suggested donation for seniors of $2.75. Logan Marshall and others will be performing skate- board demos as a fundraiser for our local skatepark 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9. "Totally Unprepared" is what happens when you put 90 years ago... Elegant New Store Opened This Morning The new store of Miss Mary M. Brady and Mrs. Annie M. Campbell at 412 Walnut Street, combining two lines of business in one of the most attractive places ever seen in Red Bluff, was opened to the public at 10 o'clock this morning.
