IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY PAGE 5 Gamma Upsilon Awarded True Merit Honorable Mention Major Changes Implemented for Active Chapter T he last six months have been nothing short of incredible for Gamma Upsilon. This summer I was honored to attend the 81st ATW Congress in Orlando, Florida. At this five-day event, the National Fraternity gave valuable information for the chapter to continue its success. There was no better way to end Congress than with Gamma Upsilon being awarded with True Merit Honorable Mention at the awards ceremony, the first national award Gamma Upsilon has won in five years. Winning this award validated the hard work and rededication to the core values of ATW. It provided a new hope for our chapter which has been searching to find its identity. This semester the executive board set out with one goal—change. There needed to be a transformation in how the chapter operated to raise the bar to full True Merit status. The first change was with recruitment. Instead of bidding those who we thought would be cool to hang out with, we decided to make criteria to outline the ideal ATW brother. This brought in the best pledge class that any of our active members have seen. They bring intelligence, integrity, and a work ethic that we have already seen in the chapter and on campus. The next adjustment was to our pledge program. We reevaluated our entire program to avoid any risk management issues that could hurt Gamma Upsilon. Our scholarship program was re-vamped by Scholarship Chairman Isaac Silver '13 to provide incentives for doing well and constructive consequences for those struggling academically. Another change set in place, thanks to Campaign Chairman Doug Kirk '75, was the Homecoming alumni event in October. It was a fantastic and successful day and the undergraduates were very interested in meeting the alumni of our chapter. We look forward to continuing this event and increasing turnout each year. With this new direction in place, I believe we are on the path to earning Gamma Upsilon's first True Merit Bowl since 2009. I encourage our alumni, along with the active chapter, to celebrate our fraternity's 150th anniversary in Indianapolis next summer. T oday, many ISU students take advantage of international study experiences that benefit their careers and their understanding of the world. Two of our brothers recently took part in trips abroad and we caught up with them to hear how their travels related to their membership in ATW. William Lutz '11 was Iowa State's first athletic training student to study abroad in Taiwan during the summer of 2013. He now attends Georgia State University where he is a graduate assistant in sports medicine and works with the school's football team. Charles Patterson '11 studied in Singapore during the spring of 2013 and traveled throughout southeast Asia. As a technology consultant for Accenture, he is based out of Chicago and travels the country to design and develop data centers. Did ATW help prepare you for your study abroad experience?
