TAU TALK
ALPHA TAU OMEGA AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
and interacting with individuals
from a different culture.
CP: My fraternity brothers
came from across the country
and grew up with widely
different backgrounds. There
were many times we had to use
our differences to our advantage
when working together. In
Singapore my classmates were
from all over the world and we
had many group projects. I quickly realized the
way to be successful in our group work was to
take advantage of our differences just like we
had in ATW. Other groups were unable to excel
because their differences made it too difficult to
work together.
What do you feel you gained from your time
abroad?
WL: I gained a new understanding for the
medical community from a global perspective.
I learned theories and techniques used in
traditional Chinese medicine and saw how
eastern medicine is much more hands-on and
one-on-one than what I have
learned in a western setting.
CP: Having an understanding
of Asian culture has proved
very beneficial in my career.
Having traveled through a
client's home country and
eaten the food they grew up
with has helped me quickly
build a rapport. I've found
clients to have a greater
confidence in my work and have built many
flourishing professional relationships.
Did you bring back any new skill or
understanding that you could contribute at
ATW?
WL: After studying abroad, I found I had a
better understanding of different perspectives.
The experience encouraged me to utilize the
strengths of different members.
CP: I now have a better understanding of the
benefit to a team when it has very different
participants.
