But how can we support the develop- ment of these quality traits as girls navigate through adolescence and into adulthood? And how can we demand this high standard of character from individuals of our next generations unless we as women demonstrate them also? These questions have become the catalyst for all decisions made by our local Girls Inc. organization; guiding princi- ples that allow us to match the needs of the communities we serve with our organization's mission, vision, and future goals. The fol- lowing details just a few of the recent and upcoming opportunities for Tehama County girls to be strong, smart, and bold, and for Tehama County women to serve as positive examples. Throughout the month of June 2011, Girls Inc. hosted our Mother- Daughter Communication Work- shop series at the Corning Family Resource Center for girls 9-14 years old and their female care- givers. This 4-week program tack- les communication within families, encouraging mothers and daughters to work together to establish shared boundaries and build trusting rela- tionships. One participant of the Corning workshop series said this experience helped her to "learn to be able to handle stress around [her] children better, get to know [her] daughter, and have much better family communi- cation." Girls Inc. also par- ticipates in the health of our local girls to help build strong, smart, and bold bodies and lifelong healthy habits. Over this 2011 sum- mer season, Tehama Family Fitness Center offered Mind+Body® programming for girls 8- 14 years old. Curriculum focuses on the impor- tance of physical fitness, nutrition and healthy eating, positive body image, and stress management for girls. Girls Inc. works under the philosophy that being physically active is not about being a superstar, being competitive, or having a spe- cific talent, but rather about having fun, so girls are more inclined to continue with it throughout their lifetimes. And finally, beginning in Octo- ber 2011, Girls Inc. programs will be back at Tehama County schools for girls between the ages of 6 and 18 years old. By providing gender- specific programs that focus on the challenges girls face each day and Emily Westphal equip them with the necessary knowledge to reach their full poten- tial, Girls Inc. prepares all girls to lead successful, indepen- dent, and fulfilling lives and to expect more of themselves and their peers. Programs offered focus on science, math, and technol- ogy, economic and media literacy, health and sexuali- ty, equality in individual and team sports, substance abuse prevention, and lead- ership and advocacy. To date, Girls Inc. of the Northern Sacramento Val- ley has worked with over 1,100 girls and their fami- lies in the North State. With the continued sup- port of these and many other commu- nity partners, Girls Inc. and Tehama County can expect more from our girls, now and for years to come. To learn more about the opportu- nities mentioned here or to see the program offerings for the 2011- 2012 school year, please visit www.girlsincnsv.org. Emily Westphal serves as executive director of Girls Inc. of the Northern Sacramento Valley. A lifelong local resident, Emily is passionate about the well-being of girls in our communities and feels blessed to call the North State home.
