Rummage sale The Women of the Presbyterian Church, 838 Jef- ferson St., in Red Bluff are holding the semi-annu- al Rummage Sale at the church. The sale will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, and 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 8. All merchandise is fresh. No holdovers. Proceeds from the sale go to fund the mission projects of the church. Taize Worship Services Taize prayer is offered on the first Sunday evening of the month, at 7 p.m., beginning Sept. 4, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, located on the corner of Elm and Jefferson Streets. We gather for contempla- tive prayer following the model developed in Taize, France, after World War II. The purpose was and is today a call to gather Christians in prayer. It is an ecumenical approach open to all Christians who desire contemplative prayer, music and listening to a reading from scrip- ture. Gathered around the cross, we pray especially for healing and peace. The sequence is meditative and heartfelt, a draw- ing together in Christ's name and presence. After experiencing Taize Prayer, many return simply for the holiness of silence and prayer for all manner of things. We welcome all those who would like to pray with us. For more information call St. Peter's at 527- 5205. the Transfiguration – when Jesus led his most trusted colleagues up the mountain – following Peter's confes- sion of Him as the Son of the Living God. It is also the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, heralding the end of World War II in the Pacific and – saving more than a million lives on both sides by making an American invasion of Japan unnecessary. It is the day prayer was banned in American public schools by edict of the Supreme Court. And it is the day more than thirty thousand Christians gathered at Reliant Stadi- um in Houston, Texas, to call on God to answer the humble prayers of a repentant Body of Christ. It was my privilege to attend at The Response: A Call to Prayer for a Nation in Cri- sis. The worship that morning began with Days of Elijah, the anthem for this season of unprecedented signs, wonders, and decisions for Jesus all over the world. John the Baptist was heralded as a second coming of Eli- jah, and he surely acted as forerunner for the first coming of Christ. Many believe the Baptist will – in some sense – usher in the Second Coming as well, and so think of this as his Eli- jah season. Governor Rick Perry was the instigator for this event and he addressed the crowd early, saying the speakers were not pre-announced because organizers wanted people to come for Jesus, not for celebrity encounters. He added his confidence that Jesus is too smart to join a politi- cal party, but that He is always happy to hang with those who seek His face and walk where He leads. Other speakers placed the responsibility for the nation's suffering squarely on the shoulders of a Church committing the same sins we decry in others while lacking the courage to come clean and go public. "How can we speak of one nation under God when we do not have one Church under God?" asked one. Scriptures like 2 Chronicles 7:14 – if the people of God humble themselves – Joel 2 – the solution to multiple crises is for the people of God to fall on their faces before Him rather than pointing the finger at others – and Genesis 18 – in which the Lord agrees to spare Sodom if even ten right- eous can be found there. In other words, God's anger burns not because of wicked people, but because of a Church that cannot be found worship- ping and interceding for the people. We were chal- lenged to become that Church and to bless those who curse us. I enjoyed the T-shirts as much as anything I saw; they were worth the price of the trip. One said, "The administration has not changed; God is still on the throne." Another read, "God belongs in my city." My favorite simply pointed out, "If you want to walk on water you have to step out of the boat." There were times of celebrating reconciliation in small prayer groups between generations, ethnic groups, and people of the various streams of the Church. Every denomination was represented and celebrated. We echoed God's call for a new Great Awakening, and we were challenged to recognize it not in a new generation CHARITY MAKES US RICHER The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visitation Catholic Church, Kansas City, Mo.: For charitable giving, the Word of God in Scripture serves as our financial planner. Scripture calls us to a lifetime target of annually giving 10 percent of our income to charity. That's where the word "tithe" comes from. Tithe means 10, it doesn't mean, "Whatever I choose to give." Charity can mean our faith community, other not- for-profit organizations and the disadvantaged. In reality most people don't give at that 10 percent level. Employment, personal health, children and other situations all factor in to what we give to charity. But Scripture calls us to annually give 10 percent of our income to make giv- ing a real priority of our lives. Even though most people don't follow that advice of Scripture, it would be in the spir- it of that advice to each year decide to give some percent- age of our income — 2, 5 or 7 percent — to charity. To give a predetermined percentage of our income and not just some casual flat amount is a good step in the right direc- tion. James Wilson GodTalk of superstar leaders, but in a new gen- eration of transparency – so that only Jesus will be the face of the commu- nity, and His gifts will be passed from hand to hand as the situation requires. Although the Church was challenged to become the Kingdom in the Matthew 11 sense, and promised that when we take up that challenge the nation will be just fine without fur- ther ado, not a negative or bashing (of any kind) word was heard all day – except from the protesters outside who accused us of foment- ing hatred. We were exhort- ed only to love, but the exhortation had an edge of urgency to it. The time is short. The gathering in Houston was called by a sitting state governor who is now run- ning for president. Whether he will be the best candidate for the office remains to be seen; it is certainly too soon to tell and one should not vote for or against some- one because of one event – that is the import of Governor Perry's own statement that Jesus is too smart to join a party. We are to follow Him, not seek to woo Him to follow us. But I do applaud Rick Perry for the courage and the vision to state so publicly that it really is all about God in Christ. If you want to walk on water you have to step out of the boat. James A. Should you give to the church when you can't pay your bills? MAKE A WISE DECISION The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City: Some preachers say a lot of things that aren't of sound reasoning or in the best interest of the one they are talking to. In most cases when you hear something from the pulpit and deep down it doesn't sound right or feel right, it probably isn't right for you. Listen to what your preacher has to say but think wisely about the matter and make the decision yourself. You have been blessed with a good mind and are totally capable of coming to the determination of how you should live your life and manage your finances. When you receive goods or services and there is an arrangement to pay for said goods and services at a later date, you are agreeing to the provider that when future monies come to you, they are entitled to or they are the pos- sessor of an amount equal to what you owe them. When the money arrives and the time comes to give them their share, if you don't pay them but give the money to the church, in essence you are going back on your word.
