Lost to Paradise in Division-I semifinals. Red Bluff: (2010) 1-9; 1-3, 4th in Eastern Athletic — South. Last 3 Meetings 2010: Red Bluff 8, Pleasant Valley 51 — Jordan Roach carried the ball 19 times for 126 yards as Pleasant Valley beat up the Spartans in their season opener. The Vikings defense recorded seven sacks. Red Bluff's score came on a 29-yard pass play from Cody Case to Jared Foley. 2009: Pleasant Valley 39, Red Bluff 3 — Trevor Gipson kicked a 44- yard field goal, but that was about all the highlights for the Spartans. Brad Lohse ripped up the Red Bluff secondary going 10-16 for 245 yards and four touchdowns. Logan Valencia caught five balls for 132 yards and Jordan Roach rushed for 105. Derek Jones was in on 15 tack- les for the Spartans. 2008: Red Bluff 25, Pleasant Valley 21 — The Spartans rallied for the win with a pair of fourth quarter scores to overcome a 201-yard rushing game from PV's Brandon Nickas. Colin Ramirez hooked up with Cole McKenzie for one touchdown and Zack Schwabauer rushed in the game winner. Ramirez also threw a touchdown pass to Scott Avery earlier in the game and McKenzie had a rushing touchdown in the first. Vikings' Scouting Report By the end of last season it was hard to predict what P.V. team would show up. The Vikings lost to Enterprise, only to beat Foothill. They scraped together a tough road playoff win at Corning only to be slaugh- tered by Paradise. 7 p.m. Mindset key for Spartans recovery Fri Oct. 28 vs Oroville After playing three quarterbacks a season ago, the Vikings enter this year with Eric Ascencio set to be the No. 1. Jordan Roach averaged 5.19 yards per carry when healthy in 2010 and will assume the top spot in the backfield again. He always does well against the Spartans. The biggest graduation loss for the Vikings was their big man Jordan Rigsbee. That will allow lineman across the EAL to breathe a sigh of relief. It also means Pleasant Valley, which relied upon Rigsbee to attack defenses last year will be searching for a new identity. Fri Nov. 4 vs Las Plumas By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The 2010 season was a difficult one as the question around Spartan Stadium changed from 'when do we get back to the playoffs again' to 'when are we going to win a game again.' Then sparked by the Northern Sec- tion's mathematical playoff formula, those two questions merged into one. After starting the season 0-8, Red Bluff needed to win just its final two games of the season to reach the play- offs. The Spartans ended their losing skid by knocking off Oroville 27-7 in Week 9. However, they couldn't take advantage of a lowly Las Plumas team and lost not just the game, but their playoff hopes to conclude the season. While it would be easy to assume all the optimism was sucked out of the Red Bluff program — remarkably you would be wrong. Credit head coach John Miller, as the Spartans' training camp this past month has been surprisingly upbeat. Then again, the Spartans appear to be full of contradictions. The turnout for varsity football plummeted from the mid 50s to the mid 30s — yet the Spartans appear on paper to be a deeper team. The seniors saw plenty of action last year through Red Bluff's barrage of injuries and the junior class is ripe with quality players. Oddly enough this 1-9 football team appears to be on the rise and it's one that is going to challenge oppo- nents. On offense, Red Bluff will be using a single back, no tight end spread. "It's because of the athletes we have," Miller said. "We had to look at our team and say what would best fit this team." The coaching staff believes it has an advantage in the depth of its receiv- ing corp. It starts with returners Ty Smith and Cody Case. Add in juniors Wyatt Houghtby and Mitch Fox as well as Brad Raines and converted tight end Garrett Spangler and Red Bluff hopes other teams won't be able to match them 4-wide across the field. Slinging the ball around for Red Bluff will be Taylor Figgs, who takes over where he left off last season as the starting quarterback. Miller said starting the second half of last season gave Figgs confidence in throwing the ball. The added value of his running ability gave him the nod over Garrett Sandow, who should be a reliable backup. Miller had high praise for Sandow citing his football smarts as among the best he's ever coached. Sandow should also see time as wide receiver along with Andrew Reedy further adding to the Spartans' depth in that department. Gage Grabfelder will be the Spar- tans' super back, lining up alongside Figgs in the backfield. Grabfelder, used primarily as a fullback last year, will have more opportunities to showcase his ability to make cuts this time around. The offensive line also appears to be a strength with five seniors. Ryan Hassel will anchor at center with Jeff Skaggs going back to a more natural position at guard and a beefed up Patrick Froome on the other side. Dereak Webster is a strong left tackle and Dustyn Clayton brings a 283-pound frame to right tackle. Braeden Fales will also see action. Miller is handing off most of the offensive duties to his assistants so he focus this season on his speciality — a 5-3 defense. Red Bluff's success will start with the highly athletic Brandon Ragone, who Miller says can account for two gaps just with his speed. Spangler, Tucker Gulliford and Fox will see time on the line as well with Skaggs and Clayton inside at the tackle spots. Hassel will start at middle line- backer. Grabfelder will use his ability to read plays from an outside linebacker spot. Webster and Fales will also fac- tor. The defensive backfield has plenty of options plucked from the receiving corps. Smith's ability to play a lockdown corner will provide opportunities for Red Bluff to mix in blitzes. Houghtby will man the other cor- ner and could mature into another lockdown corner. Cody Case and Kyle Case along with Reedy, Sandow, Raines and Levi Culp should see action as well. Tyler Reed is expected to handle most of the kicking duties although Figgs can kick extra points and Clay- ton can kick off. Houghtby, Raines and Smith will be the return men. However Spartan fans know when it comes to special teams it's been the coverage side that has routinely doomed Red Bluff in past seasons. Miller said the coaching staff has made that a priority this year — spending about a third of practice on special teams. He said this year players will have to earn their spot on special teams. A surprise for the Spartans this training camp was Bryce Eggert. Miller said the former swimmer has shown the most improvement over the camp and has worked his way into playing time. Red Bluff again faces one of the tougher schedules in the North State. It includes a brutal four-game road stretch with games at West Valley, Lassen, Paradise and Foothill. After those four games Red Bluff comes home to host Oroville and Las Plumas to close the season. As last year showed those aren't necessarily give mes, but Red Bluff will feel confident about picking up wins in both. That leaves the first month of Red Bluff's schedule as a key to whether the Spartans can prove to be a .500 team in 2011. Red Bluff opens with home tilts against Pleasant Valley and Shasta before traveling to Corning for the Tehama County Shootout. They host Chico in Week 4, before departing on that tough road trip. Last year two wins wold have seen Red Bluff into the playoffs. This year there's hope Red Bluff could get in without the numbers working so dras- tically in their favor. "Getting back to the postseason would be huge for the morale around here," Miller said. While Miller's words ring true, they are also another example of a Red Bluff contradiction . To get that program morale boost from reaching the playoffs, first Red Bluff's going to have to keep its team morale for an entire season. 4 Garrett Sandow QB/CB 6 Taylor Figgs 7 Mitch Fox QB/S 8 Tucker Gulliford RB/DE 9 Levi Culp WR/S WR/DE WR/CB 10 Wyatt Houghtby WR/CB 11 Jace Jonsson 12 Cody Case 13 Ty Smith TB/P 21 Andrew Reedy WR/S 22 Brad Raines 24 Kyle Case WR/CB 14 Tanner Martinez WR/LB 19 Robert Martinez WR/CB 20 Tyler Reed WR/CB TB/S 30 Gage Grabfelder TB/OLB 33 Aaron Clark 34 Brandon Bowen WR/CB 43 Alex Hagen 51 Braeden Fales WR/CB TB/CB 54 Dereak Webster T/OLB 55 Jeff Skaggs 56 Ryan Hassel 57 Eddie Spidle 58 Pierce McClelland T/DT 60 Patrick Froome G/DT 62 Peyton Sulzer 63 Ryland Stratton G/DT 65 Bryce Eggert 66 Anthony Garaventa G/DE 72 Cody Walden G/ILB G/DT T/DT 74 Brandon Ragone G/NG 77 Dustyn Clayton T/DT 78 Trevor Goodwin T/DT 82 Garrett Spangler WR/DE T/MLB G/DT C/MLB G/NG Red Bluff Spartans 2011 Football Roster JR 6-0 173 SR 5-10 170 JR 6-1 175 JR 5-8 165 JR 5-10 158 JR 6-1 170 SR 5-7 170 SR 6-1 173 SR 6-0 178 SR 5-11 171 SR 6-5 183 SR 6-0 175 SR 5-10 163 SR 6-0 171 JR 5-8 157 SR 6-1 212 JR 5-7 132 JR 5-11 155 JR 5-6 132 SR 6-1 223 SR 6-1 200 SR 6-0 257 SR 5-11 186 SR 5-10 163 SR 5-8 199 SR 5-11 231 JR 5-8 191 JR 5-7 172 SR 5-10 191 SR 5-10 181 JR 5-7 197 JR 5-10 175 SR 6-1 283 JR 5-11 253 SR 6-3 185 Fri Oct. 7 1B Thursday September 1, 2011 Red Bluff Spartans 2011 Football Schedule Fri Sept. 30 at West Valley Fri Sept. 23 vs Chico Fri Sept. 16 at Corning Fri Sept. 9 vs Shasta Fri Sept. 2 vs Pleasant Valley at Lassen Fri Oct. 14 at Paradise Fri Oct. 21 at Foothill FOX-30 From U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
