"These positions taught me how to work with others as a group to achieve a common goal," he says. "It's easy to leave college and think you know everything, but ATW taught me to listen and learn from others." Jim admits, above all, he is thankful for the relationships he made as a Gamma Eta, as these connections have stayed with him throughout his life. Jim stays connected with ATW brothers through social media, especially those in the member classes from 1973 to 1976. He looks forward to the ATW Christmas party each year when they all have a chance to get together and catch up. "Gamma Eta, I hope, will live on forever—it certainly will in my heart and mind." Jim reflects on his success since graduating from UT and attributes three different things to his accomplishments. The first is his faith, which he leans on to keep him grounded and motivated; his family is second for their unconditional love and support; and third is having a career he truly enjoys, which gives him the drive to wake up and be successful each day. Whether it's as a husband, father, businessman, entrepreneur, or teacher, Jim urges undergraduates and alumni early in their careers to "go in early and stay late—be the best you can be no matter what field you're in." As president of Tommie Vaughn Motors, Jim owns two Ford dealerships, one Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep Ram, Polaris dealership, and has over 200 employees working for him, including his two sons, Kyle, who graduated from Texas A&M, and Kirby, who graduated from Texas Tech. Jim says one of his biggest accomplishments from his professional career was being chairman of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association and getting the opportunity to travel throughout Texas, visiting and working for franchise dealers to improve the state government and franchise laws, making Texas the number one state car association in the U.S. Hunting, fishing, and spending time on their family ranch are just a few of Jim's most cherished hobbies. Together, Jim and his wife, Jeanie, volunteer their time with a nonprofit organization which raises money for education in Texas. "Over the years, we've come to realize how important education is to the future of our great state of Texas." Jim says he lives by the Texas Cowboy motto, "Give the best you have to Texas, and the best will come back to you—Hook 'em!"
