Theta Kite Alpha Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta • Established at Purdue University in 1915 • Fall 2014 ALPHA CHI MOVING AT LIGHT SPEED Join Your Sisters Today; Donate Your Time, Talent, and Resources W ith great pleasure I share with you that the Century of Sisterhood campaign is soaring. As you read in our most recent update we have increased our goal to $1.25 million with the aim of reducing or eliminating our mortgage debt. Not only have we increased our goal, but four generous alumnae have set a $70,000 matching challenge. They will match dollar-for-dollar any new pledges and gifts made to the campaign by December 31, 2014, meaning, when met, we will have $140,000 to count toward our new goal. Ring out three cheers! As you know, the dual goals for this campaign are to reduce our mortgage debt and to renovate the first floor public spaces of the chapter house. With less–and ultimately no–debt, the corporation's annual budget will be in a position to meet annual maintenance and update needs, as well as create a reserve account to fund unexpected demands and periodic improvements. The success of the campaign is not our only reason to celebrate. Our chapter house has been upgraded to light speed. This has been a three-summer-long project: upgrading the computer room, upgrading our Internet connection, and this summer, installing a new wireless network. This work is a critical contribution to the technical tools today's Purdue students are expected to have. Please read on in the Kite to hear about new windows, a much-needed facelift for the bum room, outstanding progress on the Century of Sisterhood campaign, and the centennial celebration, now less than a year away. Several of your sisters are engaged in planning our centennial celebration on May 22-24, 2015. Please join us in the planning or volunteer to be a class chair to help gather your pledge sisters and other longtime friends. Visit our website (www.alphachithetas.org) or Facebook page to keep updated on the evolving details. It's important to book your hotel room and reach out to your sisters today! Please be sure to fill out the enclosed update form to help us with our planning. Most of the current members of the Facility Corporation were elected to their second and final terms. This would be the perfect time for you to consider joining the board. Let me know if you are interested. Loyally, Mary Lincoln Campbell '64 Alpha Chi Facility Corporation President (734) 516-8337 Campbell@edfvc.com Lead Challenge Donor Has Wonderful Memories of Theta W e are so pleased to profile Nancy Hayes Gill '53 who is the lead donor for our matching challenge. Nancy and three other Thetas will match every dollar pledged by December 31, 2014, up to $70,000. This gives us a chance to raise $140,000, and put us well on our way to our new goal of $1.25 million. Nancy shared with us wonderful memories of her days in the Theta house: stories and laughs that still endure today, including, going on a summer tour of Europe in 1954 with Helen Pielemeier Theobald '51, Sara Pielemeier Ramming '52, and Lea Thomas Johnston '52, and driving back to Indiana from California in the '50s with Ruth Pence White '53 and Judy Sargeant Lockett '52 in Judy's big Buick, visiting the Purple Onion and The Hungry I in San Francisco on the way. After college, Nancy taught two years in Crawfordsville, Indiana, then overseas at U.S. military bases for two years. She settled in San Francisco, in the East Bay after earning her counseling and guidance requirements and a master's degree. Through the years she kept in touch with her Theta sisters, including Helen, Sara, Lea, Ruth, Judy, Margaret Carter '52, Allison Mead Baker Frenzel '50, Zoe Coulson '51, and Bev Starnes Gerding '51. She also always had a beloved Springer Spaniel at her home. Judy says, "Nancy is a good friend and can always be counted on for a lot of fun. She is especially proud to be a Theta, and she helped make the house a good place to call home." If you haven't yet joined our Century of Sisterhood campaign, we hope you will answer Nancy and the three other Theta women in the matching challenge. We will be sending out a letter in November to update you on our progress and introduce our four challengers. Meanwhile, we appreciate your support.
