We have confronted him about his sins, but he acts as though he has done noth- ing wrong. I have a maternal aunt who has a son, but we don't know his father. Our family believes that our father is also his fa- ther because our cousin looks like my father when he was young. My father calls my cousin often and even attended his graduation. We have asked our father and our aunt about our cousin's paternity, but they both deny it. Our aunt said she will disclose the identity of the father at the right time. We just want the truth. We know it will hurt, but it will set us free. —It'sComplicated DEAR COMPLICATED » If your aunt asked me this question, I would urge her to disclose her son's parentage to him (if she hasn't already) because her son has a right to know his biological par- entage, and also because this sort of family secret has a way of snowballing, as your question demonstrates. Given your father's behavior, it is a distinct possibility that you have other siblings out there, but you cannot force him to reveal it. DEAR AMY » My wife of 25 years is saying she doesn't want to spend time with my family if I won't sup- port her in disputes with them. The problem is she goes from zero to 90 in a matter of seconds. For example, we gathered at my brother's house a few weeks after my wife's father died. My brother hadn't informed his wife about my wife's loss, and she innocently asked my wife how her father was doing. My wife erupted at my brother, screaming at him. I don't think my brother had a chance to apologize immediately because my wife was in such a rage. She is angry at me because she felt I didn't support her. She has suggested that a sign of support would have been getting back in the car and leaving. Frankly, I was dumbstruck by the whole scene, and I'm not sure what I could have or should have done. My wife didn't accom- pany us last year to my brother's for Thanksgiv- ing weekend and is imply- ing she doesn't want to go this year. I don't know how to placate her. What should I do? — Harried Husband DEAR HARRIED » Yes, you should be supportive of your wife, but this should not translate into defend- ing her rages. In the situ- ation you describe, her feelings are completely justified, but this does not mean she (also) gets to behave badly. Basically, your message to her should be, "I sup- port you, but this doesn't mean that I must behave the way you behave." I do not think you should leave your wife behind on Thanksgiving Day, however.
