Ontheair By Ronald Blum The Associated Press EAST HARTFORD, CONN. LandonDonovanranonto a backheel pass from Jozy Altidore in the 25th min- ute, looked at the goal from 12 yards and drove in a right-footed shot in like he had so many times before. Storybook ending? Not this time. The ball clanked off a post, and Donovan couldn't beat Ecuador goalkeeper Maximo Banguera to the rebound. Sixteen minutes later, the most-accomplished national team career of an American player came to an end. Donovan was applauded and cheered by the crowd of 36,265 at Rentschler Field on Friday night, when he couldn't add to his American records of 57 international goals and 58 assists. "I was watching Jeter a few weeks back. I thought that would be a perfect way to score a goal, but unfor- tunately it didn't happen tonight," Donovan said, a reference to the win- ning hit by Yankees cap- tain Derek Jeter in his fi- nal home game. After the 1-1 draw ended, he hugged each of his teammates in the center of field, then took a slow lap around the field, using the sleeves of his sweat top to dab the tears from his eyes. In front of the benches, he hugged what appeared to be family members, and then he climbed in front of the stands behind a goal to lead the American Outlaws supporters in a chant of "I Believe That We Will Win!" Donovan did contrib- ute to Mix Diskerud's fifth-minute goal. Dono- van crossed the ball from the left flank, and Altidore failed to connect. DeAndre Yedlin, the 21-year-old de- fender who is among the top American players of the next generation, played the ball in front of the goal, where Diskerud scored from 12 yards. Ecuador gained the tie when Enner Valencia scored in the 88th minute. U.S. SOCCER Donovanhitspostinfinale, atie and 17 assists. Gilsa Castellon made 11 digs. Mercy defaulted at No. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. The Sacramento Valley League finals are Oct. 18 and 21 at Live Oak. Roundup FROM PAGE 1 "We thought that was a lot of arm strength," Giants vice president of player per- sonnel Dick Tidrow said re- cently, smiling. Bruce Bochy, then in his fourth year with the Gi- ants, watched the clip be- fore Bumgarner was called up later that month. He wanted to know what the Giants had on their hands, and he loved what he saw. His pitching coach, Dave Righetti, had made a simi- lar throw as a Yankee. "You saw it right there," Bochy said. "You saw the fire." This season, the baseball world has seen it. Bumgarner is the Giants' ace, the Game 1 starter in this National League Divi- sion Series and a burgeon- ing leader in the clubhouse at the age of 25. He leads by example, and often it's an explosive one. Bumgar- ner is the Giants pitcher most likely to throw at an opponent he deems to have crossed a line. Twice this year he clashed with Dodgers star Yasiel Puig. It was not lost on the Giants clubhouse that Puig slowly backed off when Bumgarner threw his glove down during a con- frontation at Dodger Sta- dium last month. These are the moments when Bumgarner lets the fire out, despite his best efforts. "I don't like anybody to be able to tell how I'm feeling," he said. "I try to stay even keel and I don't want you guys, or the other team, or the fans or anyone to know where my head is at, even though sometimes it's probably in some bad places." It's rare that Bumgarner actually breaks from char- acter, but he does send a not-so-subtle hint about what's underneath that beard and calm stare as he takes the mound. Bumgar- ner's warm-up song is "Fire on the Mountain" by the Marshall Tucker Band, and teammates say the inten- sity is there even when it's not showing, as it does so clearly with famously fiery right-handers Jake Peavy and Ryan Vogelsong. "He's up there. He's prob- ably just as intense as both of us, but we all do it in our different ways," Vogelsong said. "Jake is pretty vocal and I kind of hold it in and try to generate it into con- centration and focus. He's that way, too, but you can see he lets it out every once in a while. He's a gamer." Giants FROM PAGE 1 with Jared Veldheer sign- ing with the Arizona Cardi- nals while the Raiders ne- gotiated with Rodger Saf- fold of the St. Louis Rams. When Saffold failed his physical and went back to St. Louis, the Raid- ers turned to Penn, who had been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A quarter of the way through the season, Pro- footballfocus has Penn grading out higher than Veldheer, the Cardinals' left tackle, or Saffold, who was moved to left guard by the Rams. Credited with giving up a dozen sacks last season in Tampa, Penn, 31, acknowl- edged getting beaten "a fair share" of times but said in several instances other factors were involved that aren't discernible to the na- ked eye. "I didn't have any luck," Penn said. "Everything bad that could happen hap- pened. All that talk and be- ing downgraded . . . peo- ple saying that I'm old. I'm not old. I'm young. I've still got a lot left in me, man. I tangle with the best D- ends week in and week out and I'm going to continue to do that." Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano, who served as the offensive line coach for the first four games, said Penn has been a pleas- ant surprise. "I think Donald would tell you he wishes he had some plays back (last year)," Sparano said. "I would say I had high ex- pectations for Donald Penn when we got him, but he is playing even better than I anticipated at this point." A veteran of 116 games and 112 starts, Penn has been energized by learn- ing new techniques from Sparano. "Even on days when I'm tired or I'm dragging a lit- tle bit, Tony's such a good coach he gets the work out of me," Penn said. "He did a good job watching my film last year and getting me different tools to put in my tool box, helping make me a better player." Said Sparano: "Some- times you get players and you're trying to break them of habits and they're stuck in their ways a little bit . . . (Donald) is an easy guy to coach." • Quarterback Derek Carr is listed as "question- able" with a knee and an- kle injury and Sparano said barring setbacks he is ex- pected to play. "I'll be good to go," Carr said. Sparano would not say whether Matt Schaub or Matt McGloin will be the backup. Right tackle Kha- lif Barnes (quad) will not play against the Chargers, with Menelik Watson get- ting the start. Also out is cornerback Keith McGill (groin). Linebacker Sio Moore (ankle) and fullback Mar- cel Reece (quad) were both limited and listed as ques- tionable but expected to play. Cornerback Tarell Brown (thumb) was added to the injury report, was full in practice and listed as probable. Wide receiver Vincent Brown (ham- string) was limited.
