M E N d y C A L E G A R I A Big H eart Mendy Calegari had a busy calendar in September. As a member of the event com- mittee for Ladies Night at the Mart, she was at Marin Country Mart for a major fund raiser for Sunny Hills Services on September 19, and one week later, she was an honoree at St. Vincent's School for Boys in Marinwood, when her business, Marin Roto-Rooter, received a Spirit of Marin Award as Best Small Business of the Year. Add her duties as company president and her role as mom of a first-grader to the community service that's important to her, and it becomes apparent she has a very full life. As president of Marin Roto-Rooter, she's the third generation to run the family business, a franchise with rights for all of Marin County, which her uncle acquired in 1957. Her father, Don, took over the reins in 1972, and Mendy joined the business 17 years ago as office manager when her father's secretary retired. She learned many of her skills on the job and says, "I've learned everything by being hands-on." She credits her father, whom she describes as her mentor, for teaching by example, saying, "I acquired my leadership skills by working alongside my dad, who is undeniably the hardest working, most generous man I know." Her career evolved, By Judith M. Wilson The Pacific baseball players this past July showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness by donning uniforms like the women ballplayers in "A League of their Own". Dresses were presented by Marin General Hospital and Marin Roto-Rooter. – Photo is courtesy of Tristan Barbieri.
