Sigma Phi EPSilon Colorado Alpha Looks Forward to Another Successful Semester Chapter Succeeds in Philanthropy, Recruitment, and Academics S ince the last newsletter, a lot has happened at Colorado Alpha. As president, I feel that we are headed in the right direction on multiple levels. We established an annual philanthropy event, increased member involvement, and balanced a huge deficit. These are just a few highlights resulting from hard work of the executive team. They are great leaders and work very well together. With their help, and that of Chapter Counselor Don Morris, Iowa Beta '78, Colorado Alpha is well on our way to winning that next Buc Cup. Chapter Sets Sights on Number One GPA Ranking Academically, the Chapter has seen a slight improvement in our GPA, which now sits at 2.912. This ranks us third among CU's 16 fraternities and first out of the larger ones. It is our goal to keep improving this and hopefully take back our number one spot within the next few years. This fall, we will be implementing a new program where the top scholars work with brothers who need additional academic support. We are also continuing our scholastic programs, such as a resume building workshops and adding a career search program for upperclassmen. Successful Philanthropy Event Raises $9,000 On April 26, we launched the first Checking for Cancer event and raised $9,000 for the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. The event consisted of an all-Greek hockey game, on-ice entertainment, raffle prizes, and a concession stand. The event did not come easy, however, as it required effort from every brother to recruit sponsors, organize the hockey game, and make sure everything ran smoothly. Sure enough, everything went off without a hitch and we received very good feedback about the evening. We can't wait to host the event again next spring. Membership to Top 100 This Fall Our executive team has been working very hard this year and it reflects in our members. We currently sit at the 90-member mark, with hopes to add 30-40 new members later this fall. Our new member education program was well received in the spring, and Vice President of Membership Development Grant Renner '15 hopes to continue this with this next class. "It is awesome to see these young men grow up and slowly become men during their first semester of SigEp," Grant said. T hroughout the campaign and site wall project, the involvement and experience of property manager Cory Robinson were an integral part of Colorado Alpha's success. He has continued to be of great assistance in leasing the property over the summer. We caught up with Cory to get to know him better and get a glimpse into a day in the life of our property manager. Where are you from? I was born in Red Deer, Alberta, and came to the United States in 1978 when my father was transferred to Texas with his oil company. We moved to Denver in 1982 and I graduated from Mullen High School in 1989 and later from the University of Colorado in 1993. The responsibility and work that comes with being a property manager is huge. Why did you first become interested in the position? I have worked in property management since college at CU. I first started doing maintenance work, and after graduation I was hired to manage property on The Hill, in addition to running the condo conversion of a large complex called Trout Farm near Folsom and Valmont. My responsibilities grew and for 10 years I ran Professional Property Management in Boulder. Then in 2001, I decided to go out on my own and started Robinson Investment. I earned the SigEp Buffs job because my former boss at PPMI is a SigEp and SigEp contacted him about who to hire to help manage the fraternity. That person was me. What are your duties in this role? How long have you served as property manager? My duties are to oversee the maintenance and financial management of the property, and I have been in this position since 2008. Could you describe what a typical day for you is? What types of activities do you do? SigEp is just one of my clients – so on the whole my day involves nonstop bookkeeping, maintenance response and crisis management. What goals do you have in mind for Colorado Alpha? Pride in the fraternity, pride in the property, increase the number of brothers actually living in the house. What has been your favorite experience so far as property manager? The renovation of the corner courtyard that sits on Broadway. Cory lives with his wife and business partner, Stacy, in Broomfield, Colorado. They have three sons, ages 2, 11, and 13. He enjoys fishing, skiing and the outdoors. The family likes to travel to Hawaii where Stacy is originally from. You can contact Cory at coryrobinson@comcast.net.
