p. 2 OREGON BETA HEARTBEAT Tom practiced architecture in Eugene, Oregon, for more than 30 years. At the end of 1989, he sold the practice and tried retirement, which lasted less than six months. He then left Eugene and began managing architectural aspects of bank mergers and acquisitions, first in San Francisco, next in New York City, and finally nationwide. He now manages the R&D and manufacture of LED illumination products developed by business associates. "This is more than a full-time commitment—keeps me out of the 'devil's workshop,'" Tom said. "I have no interest in retirement, as long as I can be productive." He still values the opportunities provided through his college experience and encourages undergraduates to recognize the importance of their education. "Your home and material possessions can be taken from you, but they cannot take away the knowledge gained through your educational experience. Don't overlook opportunities to become involved in extracurricular activities. For example, I was blessed to have the invaluable opportunity to be editor of the 1959 yearbook and other activities, such as participation in the Friars." Tom resides in Lakeville, Minn. He enjoys woodworking, skiing, and sailing. He is certified to sail 30'-50' boats and has sailed in several countries, including New Zealand. Tom can be reached at tcmoreland@earthlink.net. Former Chapter advisor appreCiative oF sigep experienCe (Continued from page 1) J im Rippey '53 is a brother proud of his Oregon Beta heritage and a brother Oregon Beta is proud to call their own. After graduating from Oregon, Jim co-founded Columbia Management Company, one of the largest money management firms in the Pacific Northwest, a career he feels SigEp helped prepare him for. The leadership experience he gained as Chapter president and house manager served as training for the making of a career that helped change the landscape of global finance. "My time as Chapter president gave me a lot of confidence and let me shine. I learned teams need to be able to pull in the same direction; that's leadership. Motivation is most important." Not only did SigEp teach Jim early financial wisdom, it also created a way of life and business rooted by SigEp's values. "In my line of business, character is very highly regarded. Our reputation as Columbia was always very high and that carried us a long way." Many people in Jim's life today have been there since his undergraduate years at SigEp, including his wife, Shirley, whom he met through a SigEp brother. His closest friends still are his Chapter brothers. "Six of us, in our 80s, meet a couple times a year and pick up like we saw each other yesterday." Since Jim's retirement in 1998, he spends his time as an advocate and philanthropist to nonprofits like Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, the University of Oregon, and his family's foundation, the JFR Foundation, which focuses on children's causes and education.
