ByAndreByik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter CORNING The Pleasant Valley Vikings varsity football team staged a romp on the road here, beating the Corning Cardinals 56-14 and improving to 3-0 on its season. "The fact that we can be in two close games and win those, and we can have a blowout, and we can win that — that re- ally (places) everybody's con- fidence really really high," Vi- kings coach Mark Cooley said. The Vikings left little doubt in their sound nonleague win at Corning High School. Pleasant Valley established its run game early, capping a 10-play drive on its first possession of the game with a 4-yard touchdown from running back Anthony Jensen. Corning (1-1), for its part, countered quickly and took a brief 7-6 lead after Chance Nel- son notched a 56-yard kick re- turn to the Pleasant Valley 33-yard-line, eventually setting up a 3-yard rushing touchdown Joseph Aguirre. The Vikings, however, had all the answers on the night and would regain the lead for good after quarterback Trent Darms hooked up with Urrutia Shane twice for 25 yards before run- ning in a 47-yard touchdown himself with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter. Pleasant Valley, which uti- lized a dual-quarterback strat- egy in the first half with Darms and Hughes Brandt trading snaps, would score every time held posession in the first half, which ended with the Vikings up 49-14. Corning's Alex Davila notched a 95-yard kick return for a TD late in the first half. Pleasant Valley's Darms fin- ished with two TDs — one re- ceiving — on the night. Brandt was 7-of-10 passing for 108 yards and three TDs. Cyland Leitner had six carries for 27 yards and one TD. Corning compounded its of- fensive struggles with turn- overs, leading to a Soloman Na- varro running back a 67-yard interception and Noah Davis recovering a fumble at the Vi- kings' 34 and running back a 66-yard TD. Cards coach John Studer said his team played out of its com- fort zone. Studer's game plan called for short passes from ju- nior quarterback Wyatt Hay- don, but many of his throws were dropped by his receivers early in the game. "We just didn't execute those plays early on," Studer said. He added: "It wasn't so much that I think we dug a hole, but we had that perception that we had dug a hole. We got a score early on, and then the mistakes started to happen. It was one of those things where one mis- take just kind of led to another mistake and led to another mis- take." Corning next travels to Red Bluff (1-2) on Friday, and Pleas- ant Valley will visit River Val- ley. By Andre Byik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter RED BLUFF Warriors 8-man football coach Marvin Benefield said Saturday's game against the Timberjacks, who came into the game undefeated, would be a test for his squad. For three quarters, the Warriors looked as if they'd have a chance to pass. Hayfork (3-0) demonstrated it had the conditioning and game plan to overcome a 14-8 deficit at halftime and go on to defeat Mercy (1-2) 42-26 in a nonleague game at Sacred Heart Parish School here. "They're the No. 1 team, they're the top team I believe," Benefield said. "I knew this was kind of a test to see where we're at, and we give them all they want until about the third quar- ter. And once again we didn't have enough to keep going." Benefield pointed to the Tim- berjacks' use of a no-huddle of- fense throughout the game, say- ing it was a smart move that turned the game into a gruel- ing grind. "If you were out hunting, and the dogs were out hunting, and they ran 10 miles and their tongues are hanging out, that's what it looked like out there," he said. Indeed, the Warriors did take advantage of a phenomenal 8-MAN FOOTBALL SturdyTimberjacksoutlastWarriors Mercy drops to 1-2 on the season, opens league play Friday ANDRE BYIK — DAILY NEWS Mercy High School's Al House (5) runs the ball against the Hayfork Timberjacks during an 8-man football game Saturday at Sacred Heart Parish School in Red Bluff. By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter ANDERSON The Anderson Cubs racked up 450 yards of offense and rolled past the visiting and depleted Red Bluff Spartans 35-7 Friday night at Bob Reid Stadium. The Spartans had 19 players not dressed for the game through injuries, grades and suspensions. Both teams are now 1-2. For the second straight week a touchdown just before halftime all but sealed the Spartans fate. The Cubs had jumped out to a 19-0 lead on Red Bluff until the Spartans offense, helped by a pair of Anderson 15-yard penalties fi- nally found the end zone them- selves. Red Bluff quarterback Kade Lewis cooly bought some time in the pocket and found Wyatt Clem- ent in the back of the end zone from 14 yards out pull the game within 19-7. The Spartans defense followed by forcing a punt, which Travis Jensen blocked by perfectly tim- ing the snap count. Red Bluff had the ball at Ander- son's 31 with a chance to cut the game to one-possession by half- time. But a holding call on their first offensive play, put Red Bluff in a hole. Two plays later Jacob Melton picked off Lewis. The Cubs had just 1:50 to work with, but made the most of it rip- ping off runs of 6, 15 and 8 yards before Grant Kingston took it in for an Anderson score from mid- field. That made it 27-7 at halftime.
