ByJohnHickey BayAreaNewsGroup CHICAGO The Oakland A's squandered a splendid start by Jeff Samardzija when Nate Freiman's throwing error set up two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth as the still hapless Athletics lost 2-1 to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. It was the 12th loss in the last 17 games for the A's (81- 64), who are reduced to bat- tling for an American League wild-card berth after having had the best record in base- ball a month ago. Avisail Garcia singled with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth off reliever Luke Gregerson to account for the White Sox's only offense of the night. It was enough as the A's had just five hits against rookie starter Chris Bassitt and the Chicago bullpen. Samardzija threw seven shutout innings, but he was done after 114 pitches. So when he did during the 49ers-Cowboys game Sunday I breathed in a sigh of relief that America was finally back to its commercialized self once again. Growing up in Big Ten coun- try the college football season is marked by the day of the year when the conference utterly em- barrasses itself on multiple na- tionally televised games. When I was younger we used to also refer to this occurrence as New Year's Day. But lately, as was the case Sat- urday, the Big Ten has decided just to throw in the towel before autumn even officially kicks in. Thanks for freeing up my Satur- days once again. While the NFL and college ranks are just digging in their cleats, here in Tehama County we're already in the middle of the prep football season. Consider the Red Bluff Spar- tans, who already this season have gone from intriguing ques- tion mark to a potential threat in the playoffs back to a ques- tion mark — and they've only played two games! Ah, but that's football. A week's work judged by 48 or 60 minutes, whatever level it is. Not only are you judged by that short time frame, since you don't play another game for a week it ends up defining you for the next six days. After the 33-13 loss to West Valley the Spartans coaching staff tried to teach their players a life lesson. They told them that if you can't learn to deal with and bounce back from a loss in foot- ball, how will you be able to do it in the rest of your life. Seeing a few emotional faces head coach Corey Hein told the boys that it was more than OK if they were hurt from the loss. Actually he told them if they weren't feeling any emo- tion about the loss, perhaps they should go try another sport — such as bowling. Their last meeting came in the 2010 playoffs. Corning had one of its better teams of the past decade, but had an unusu- ally high enrollment and had been upped to Division 1. They earned a home playoff game against the Vikings, which some felt they didn't deserve because of their schedule. PV won the game, but Corning gave them quite a fight in the 14-6 slugfest. Garman had 12 aces in Los Molinos' 25-13, 25-19, 25-9 win. The defending Northern Section Division-V champion Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-2-3 on the young season. Rachel Rogers had eight kills. Vanesa Cota dished out 19 assists. Los Molinos hosts the Beth Pilger Invitational beginning today and running through Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs are in a pool with Chester, Colusa and Mercy with games beginning at 11:30 a.m. today. Tennis UNIVERSITY PREP 9, MERCY 0 There wasn't much happen- ing for the Lady Warriors in Redding. U-Prep swept all nine matches. Mandy Ma had the best re- sult for Mercy, falling to May Dhanuha 6-2, 6-1. Ma and Angie Xiao lost their doubles match 8-2 to Dhanuha and Cat Goodsen. Mercy had to default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Mercy hosts Willows on Sept. 16.
