Now that our children are older and newly on their own, they don't even share our address. All of us have cellphones with a code. How can someone contact us in case of an emergen- cy? At a recent family din- ner no one could answer that question. Help! —ConcernedParents DEAR PARENTS » I shared your question with a spokesperson for the Chi- cago Police Department, who responded with the following information: "In the event of an emergency, law enforce- ment agencies use various investigative tools and methods to locate next of kin. Police departments have access to public re- cords and databases that are invaluable in pointing first responders in the right direction. In some instances, social media has also been used to identify, but never notify, friends and family. "It should be noted that the majority of emergency notifications are done in person. In the case of the Chicago Police Department, if a family member is not on scene, a department member will be dispatched to the victim's last known residence to notify next of kin. If the information is outdated, our depart- ment utilizes every tool at its disposal to locate and notify family. "We'd also like to stress the importance of having some piece of identification on your per- son at all times. A simple up-to-date driver's license or state identification card can help immensely in these situations. "Last, most new mo- bile smartphones allow users to set ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts accessible from the locked screen. We recommend everyone have at least two designated ICE contacts in their smartphones, so that these persons can be contacted in the event of an emergency." DEAR AMY » I'm very ac- cepting of same-sex mar- riage, and my wife's sister is married to a woman. But this woman is very masculine in appearance, and intentionally so — as she see ms not bo the red when waiters at restau- rants address her as "sir." She has short, straight hair, uses no makeup, walks and dresses like a man, and doesn't even own a skirt. She is so "butch" I'm uncomfort- able being seen with her. Is it asking too much for a woman — any woman — to at least display some feminine traits when with friends or relatives in public? — Right ... or Judgmental? DEAR JUDGMENTAL » It is too much to ask that a woman should dress in a more feminine style in order for you to be more comfortable. This is a personal choice, and none of your business. Make a choice not to care about this — and then don't care. NEACrossword Virgo(Aug.23-Sept.22)— Emotional issues will become more pronounced if you aren't honest. Be diplomatic, but don't lie to protect others' feelings. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) — Plan an event with friends. An enjoyable evening of entertain- ment will provide a welcome diversion from work-related stress and personal problems. Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) — Make your finances a prior- ity. Look into moneymaking schemes that will increase your revenue stream without a major cash outlay. Sagittarius (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) — If others seem especially trying, look at your actions and consider if you are the cause. Perhaps you have been too de- manding or short-tempered. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — This is not a good time to reveal your private plans or secrets. Aim to be a leader, not a follower. Someone you trust will let you down. Cover your back and take care of your own responsibilities. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — One way to attract influential followers is to get involved in humanitarian causes. You can make a difference if you adopt a leadership position and express your point of view. Pisces (Feb. 20-March 20) — You may be feeling anxious or hurt. Rather than dwell on nega- tive events, take this opportu- nity to do something enjoyable that will ease your mind and lift your spirits. Aries (March 21-April 19) — Don't let others make decisions for you. Plan to spend some time outdoors or get involved in a cause that you feel passionate about. You will be inspired. Taurus (April 20-May 20) — You may feel burdened by the needs of an older relative. Take a moment to address your own needs, but don't overspend in the process. Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Stay on an even keel and don't let your emotions exhaust you. Stewing over an unhappy event will lead nowhere. Channel your energy toward love and affec- tion instead. Cancer (June 21-July 22) — An industry or work-related function will provide you with the perfect chance to meet someone new and exciting. Uphold your reputation at work by performing well and putting in some overtime. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — You will have no problem making a lasting impression. Be prepared to step into the limelight. A physical chal- lenge will be invigorating and rewarding. Horoscope By Eugenia Last WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 3 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2014 REDBLUFFDAILYNEWS.COM |YOURDAILYBREAK | 3 B
