6B Daily News – Monday, July 25, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Debt crisis: Dems set meeting WASHINGTON (AP) — With bipartisan debt-limit talks dead- locked, House Republicans and Senate Democrats readied rival emergency fallback plans Sunday in hopes of reassuring world financial markets the U.S. govern- ment will avoid an unprecedented default. In a conference call, Speaker John Boehner summoned his con- servative rank and file to swing behind a "new measure" that could clear both houses of Con- gress. "It won't be 'Cut, Cap and Bal- ance' as we passed it," he said, referring to a measure — killed in the Senate on Friday — that would have required spending cuts of an estimated $6 trillion as well as congressional approval of a constitutional balanced budget amendment for ratification by the states. The new approach is "going to require some of you to make some sacrifices," he added, according to a person familiar with his remarks. A chief surgeon treating the wounded from Friday's mass shooting, meanwhile, said he believes the attacker used special "dum-dum" bullets that cause massive internal injuries. The doc- tor told The Associated Press that the killer's chosen ammo "explod- ed inside the body." The manifesto that 32-year-old suspect Anders Behring Breivik published online ranted against Muslim immigration to Europe and vowed revenge on those "indigenous Europeans" whom he deemed had betrayed their her- itage. The document said they would be punished for their "trea- sonous acts." Police said they were analyzing the approximately 1,500-page document. They said it was pub- lished Friday shortly before the back-to-back bomb and gun attacks. Opponents of gay marriage rally in NY ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Thou- sands of opponents of gay mar- riage took to the streets in loud and sometimes tense protests Sunday, the first day that legal same-sex weddings were performed. The National Organization for Marriage held rallies in New York City, Albany, Rochester and Buf- falo, saying Gov. Andrew Cuomo and lawmakers redefined marriage without giving voters a chance to weigh-in, as they have in other states. Protesters chanted "Let the People Vote!" at rallies. A rally in New York City that started with several hundred peo- ple crowding the street across from Cuomo's Manhattan office quickly swelled to thousands of people out in loud opposition to the new law. They waved signs saying "Excommunicate Cuomo" and "God cannot be mocked." ALL NEW FACILITY Your 1 Stop Convenience Store
