6A Daily News – Thursday, July 21, 2011 Pastimes Artist leaves a legacy Red Bluff Art Associa- tion in celebration of its 55th anniversary has cho- sen to honor Edna McHugh as July Artist of the Month. Edna joined RBAA in 1959 shortly after the group formed in March of 1956. At that time, the Association was meeting monthly in the Bidwell School all-purpose room. Edna was one of more than 20 artists showing their works at local venues, stores and business houses including: the Kraft Library, Tehama County Book Mobile, Tehama County Library, Red Bluff Union High School, Bar X, Crosby’s Jewelry, Dale’s Insurance, Ehorn’s Phar- macy, Dr. William Stewart Gaines’ office, Hallie’s Gift Shop, Metherd’s Saddlery, J.C. Penney, Hotel Tremont, Wilkins Jewelry and Zuckweiler’s Department Store. Edna is remembered for her passion for art and her willingness to help and vol- unteer. RBAA member Libby Coates recalls that Edna not only lived her art, but traveled far and wide to attend workshops includ- ing driving to the Tetons and flying half way across the country for another. She is also remembered for her joyful spirit and hearty laughter. Libby states, “Everyone could tell that Edna was in the room.” Edna’s legacy includes not only numerous friends who still miss her, but she also left a lasting memori- al—her sketchbook. According to RBAA presi- dent Connie Maxey, Edna’s sketchbook is a part of pre- sent-day RBAA’s library and will be displayed at the upcoming celebration to take place during Novem- ber and December com- mencing with Art Walk. Chico Performances 2011-2012 Performances August Retterath’s, This wire-bound notebook contains pages of graphite, watercolor, and pen-and- ink studies. Subjects range from florals to Lassen, Shasta, Tuscan Buttes, and still life. Most are accom- panied by notes relating to color choices and hints regarding changes she wanted to make in the final work. Sketchbooks are a tool for working out ideas before committing to larger and more expensive canvas and paper. Edna also used it to prepare a color wheel and mixing chart to see how different colors react- ed together. Her sketchbook is a legacy that continues to inform and inspire RBAA today. The Association is looking forward to display- ing a number of other works by early members and asks the community’s assistance in sharing infor- mation and stories of the early-day Red Bluff artists.
