Lambda Chi Alpha | Gamma Upsilon Chapter North Carolina State University | Fall 2014 BUZ GUZ U pon graduating from North Carolina State University, we all leave Lambda Chi Alpha with high hopes of keeping our fraternal bonds intact. Unfortunately, we quickly find that many new interests— careers, families, and civic activities—can create valid diversions. The day-to-day activities of life take over and, before long, we fall out of touch and begin to wonder what happened to our brothers. With this in mind, we have decided to relaunch production of the GUZ BUZ newsletter. This focus will help our members stay in touch and will cultivate awareness and involvement with Gamma Upsilon Chapter. It is important for all brothers to stay informed about the collegiate Chapter and what our younger brothers are accomplishing on campus and in the community. Since rechartering in 2013, the active brothers have worked hard to establish themselves among the premier fraternities at NC State. They are among the top in academics, remain involved in philanthropic activities throughout the year, and finished last spring with more than 50 members. We recognize these achievements and want to build on their momentum to prepare for the Chapter's future. Today, perhaps more than ever, college fraternities play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young men. We all know that Lambda Chi Alpha can provide a solid foundation for young men by offering a small-group living environment and opportunities for high academic achievement and the development of leadership and social skills. As alumni, it is our duty to continue providing those opportunities for future generations. The Gamma Upsilon Alumni Association recognizes this and is dedicated to providing an educationally conducive environment and a modern facility for college men well into the future. We look forward to the changes and continued growth of our Chapter in the coming year and are thankful for all of the alumni support. Over the next few issues of GUZ BUZ we will include articles on the history and management of Gamma Upsilon Chapter. It is our hope that through this new focus your fraternal bonds are regularly renewed and strengthened. We hope to see all alumni back on campus for Homecoming, November 7, and the golf tournament on October 3. A New Generation Gamma Upsilon Gave Cory Wade, GU 1215, Leadership Experience C ory Wade, GU 1215, had always wanted to join a fraternity, but he couldn't find the right chapter at NCSU. The summer between his sophomore and junior year he got an e-mail from the University sharing that Lambda Chi Alpha was starting to recolonize. Cory decided that joining the Chapter during that process would be a unique opportunity and a fun challenge. After meeting with representatives from Lambda Chi Alpha National and meeting the other men selected to start the new colony, he knew that Gamma Upsilon Chapter was going to be the right fit. His first role in the Chapter was serving as recruitment chairman. "We didn't have a Chapter House when we started recruiting, and we only had 11 other guys in the Chapter. We didn't have a lot to sell ourselves on other than the vision we had for the future of Gamma Upsilon," Cory shared. Even with those setbacks the brothers were able to recruit quality members who were strong additions to the new colony. Next, Cory served as vice president. "It was a good experience helping build an organization. My role as vice president was to hold other officers accountable. Without much leverage, it was important to learn how to work well with others and get what you want done at the same time."
