page 3 sigma phi epsilon T hough he has s p e c i a l i z e d most of his career investigating violent criminal organizations, one of the most chilling yet rewarding experiences FBI agent David Solis '90 recalls in his time at the Bureau was when he arrested a child predator who had arranged to meet what he thought was a child. When David arrived to meet the suspect, what he found shocked him. "The individual showed up with items that indicated he was going to cause serious harm to the child, if it were a real situation. I always think, 'What if it would have been a real child?'" Although David had to apply twice before he was accepted to the Bureau in 2003, he says his perseverance was largely thanks to being a member of Florida Nu. "I cannot say enough how being surrounded by such dedicated, hard- working individuals motivated me to do the best I could, whether personally or professionally." David strongly recommends a career in criminal justice to undergraduates and warns them to always be mindful of what they do and to stay accountable for the decisions they make, "whether it's social media, alcohol, or just basically being immature." Ultimately, David encourages anyone seeking careers in crime solving to "persevere through all the obstacles, red tape, and investigative challenges and you'll do fine," because "what is important, is not how smart you are, it's how hard you try." With the Balanced Man Scholarship and summer recruitment rapidly approaching, the majority of the focus has been geared toward accomplishing our goals in bringing in new members and having another successful year for the scholarship. AcAdemic excellence_______________________________________ We are happy to report that we held the second highest GPA among all fraternities on campus with a 2.958. We fully intend on reaching the top spot during the fall semester to finish out the 2014 calendar year on a high note. extrAcurriculAr And intrAmurAl involvement______________ We participated in the 12th Man football and cheerleading camp for the second year in a row with the women of Alpha Xi Delta and plan on continuing our partnership together. In regard to intramurals, I am thrilled to report that the soccer championship has once again returned to SigEp. In perhaps one of the most memorable games of my time in Florida Nu, goalkeeper Ryan Hutch '15 came up big to win the game in penalty kicks. We also reached the semi-finals in basketball, thus SigEp is once again sports cup champions. The fall semester always proves to be very busy with Homecoming, football games, and the start of a new academic school year. Florida Nu is looking to pair up with a sorority on campus to compete in the Homecoming festivities. leAdership_________________________________________________ I am proud to recognize two brothers selected to attend two of the most esteemed leadership continuums SigEp has to offer. Brother Philip Koenig '15, founder of Leading Miami, was selected to attend the Tragos Quest to Greece. In addition, Brother Stefan Bahad '15, our vice president of communications, was selected to attend the Ruck Leadership Institute. It has now been two years in a row that Florida Nu members have attended Tragos and Ruck. (Caio Muharram '13, former president, attended Tragos last summer and I attended Ruck.) Brotherhood______________________________________________ The Chapter raised over $4,000 after it came to my attention that an undergraduate's brother, alumnus Kyle Watters '08, was diagnosed with cancer. We presented the Watters family with the check at the Relay for Life held at FIU. Lastly, we are planning on having a parents' day for the first time during this upcoming semester. We are figuring out the schedule of events, as well as the dates, but we will certainly announce it once everything is finalized. We greatly appreciate the support and involvement of all alumni and look forward to establishing new connections and building upon our existing relationship.
