SFE FLORIDA NUS A PUBLICATION OF SIGMA PHI EPSILON AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY fall 2014 INSIDE: FLORIDA NUS IN UNIFORM 2-3 SIGEPS EXCEL 3 WELCOME, NEW BROTHERS 4 THE alumni and chapter continue to grow M y brothers, another summer has come and gone, which means the academic year is beginning for our undergraduates. Florida Nu's Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) has had a busy academic year as well. Last year we were able to host two happy hours, three brotherhood luncheons, one football tournament for the alumni and undergraduates, another great Homecoming event, and a career day for Chapter upperclassmen. The AVC has continued to make strides in communications with our alumni and has reduced the number of people who are considered "lost alumni" to 60. I am proud of the men who have volunteered their time and talents to help make the AVC and our undergraduate chapter strong. Alex Zarut '03 has been working on the Chapter's Balanced Man Program and mentoring the vice president of development. You'll see Alex highlighted in one of our feature articles, Florida Nus in Uniform. Frank Pena '98, who served as the vice president of public relations for the AVC for two years, will be stepping down as he takes on new responsibilities as the president of the FIU Alumni Association. He will still be an integral part of our team, even without a title. Sean Gazitua '03 not only served as chapter counselor, but also created and ran the Florida Nu alumni football tournament. Sean will be moving to the relation's vice president position this year. I am happy to announce that David Del Cristo '10 has agreed to take on the position of chapter counselor. We also had help from some non-members. Former Chapter Counselor Karen Katz has been supporting us with advice and helped lead a goal-setting retreat for the new executive board. Former SigEp Sweetheart Natalie De Rojas has also been helpful with our development team and in providing guidance in other planning and operational areas. It has been a great year because of those who have volunteered. This year, we are planning more events. You will certainly get notices for all of them, but here are some of the things we are planning: happy hour in August and December; brotherhood luncheons in September and November; a softball tournament and family picnic open to all alumni and their families on Founder's Day in November, and another Homecoming event that will include domino tables and one of the best DJs in Miami on October 18. Put these events on your calendar! We are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in being a mentor and helping shape the lives of our undergraduate members, want to help connect alumni to each other, or have an idea for an event where we can just have fun, we welcome your assistance and input. Please feel free to contact me at any time. In Brotherly Love, Michael Hernandez '04 AVC President m_hernandez9282@yahoo.com AVC BUILDING MOMENTUM Hicks Scholarship Awarded to Florida Nu Undergraduate A drian Vinas '15 was named one of only five recipients of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation Hicks Scholarship.
