2B Daily News – Monday, July 11, 2011 Frigid fellow frazzles female Soup diet ahead for this octogenarian Dear Annie: I have been married to ‘‘Ryan’’ for three years, and we dated for two years before that. It’s a second marriage for both of us. My first mar- riage was miserable and lonely, and I wanted to make sure to do it right the next time. When I met Ryan, he was sup- portive and accept- ing of my two sons. He made the effort to spend time with them. He was attentive to me. I thought he was perfect. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar making excuses for him. He won’t go to counseling. I’d go alone, but I don’t have the money. Should I cut my losses and walk away? — Frustrated in Flint, Mich. Dear Flint: Some suitors put on a good show during courtship, and once the rela- tionship is set, they The problems started not long after we moved in together. He became distant and moody and spent most of his day in front of the TV. Now, after five years, Ryan has completely alienated my boys, his co-workers and everyone else. No matter what I ask of him, he blows it off as if I’m crazy. He doesn’t seem to care that he’s pushing us away. Ryan’s doctor put him on an antidepressant to help him sleep, but he refuses to take it. He doesn’t believe he has a problem. I miss my husband, Annie. His behavior has done such a complete 180 that I don’t want to be with him anymore. I am tired of revert to form. If that’s the case, things are unlikely to change, and you might be better off leaving. However, a ‘‘complete 180’’ could also indicate that Ryan is depressed, overwhelmed by his sudden family obliga- tions or has an underlying medical problem. Suggest he get a complete physical. You also can find low-cost counseling for yourself through your church or United Way. Dear Annie: I think my mother is verbally abusive. I just finished my last year of middle school. I am now in summer school in order to prepare for a grueling high- school course load, and am also involved in many other activities. The last thing I want is to come home to a mother who will nag, nag, nag and then yell, yell, yell. My mother takes her anger out on other people. If I try to discuss this with her, she talks right over me. She constantly compares me to my older siblings, saying they were better behaved and that she wishes I were more like them. She has become more and more hurtful, calling me horrible names like ‘‘retard.’’ If I cry, she says I’m a ‘‘crybaby.’’ When I ask why she does this, she changes the sub- ject. I feel taunted and bullied by my own mother. How do I fix this? — The Crybaby Daughter Dear Daughter: Can you talk to another relative — your father, a grandpar- ent, an aunt or uncle or even one of your siblings — and ask them to intercede on your behalf? Your mother may not recognize how neg- atively her behavior affects you, and it might help for someone else to point it out. And when school starts in the fall, please talk to the school counselor or a favorite teacher who can help on an ongoing basis. Write questions to Annie’s Mailbox, c/o Creators Syndicate, 5777 W. Century Blvd., Ste. 700, Los Angeles, CA 90045. DEAR DR. GOTT: I’ve been reading your articles for years. I hope that you may have some guid- ance for me. I had my first heart attack in 1978 at the age of 47 1/2, and had triple bypasses in ‘83 and ‘90. I decided to follow the advice of my doctor at that point and retired on Social Security disability. I took my meds — but two years ago my teeth started falling out. My new dentist billed me $10,000 to fix things, but his work started falling out within two years. When I went to him for my last repair, he said nitrates used for heart problems cause deep root decay in teeth. He recommended I sim- ply use “stickums” like Fixodent to keep them in place like dentures. Is that true? No cardiologist ever mentioned that pos- In six weeks or so I will celebrate my 80th year on Earth. Dentists say they can put in expensive fixes for between $15,000 and $30,000. Maybe I’ll just have soup until God calls me! My medications have been metoprolol 1983, I awakened totally blind, which last- ed two to three months. Blood thinners helped about 20 percent of my vision to return. DEAR READER: I am unaware of either metoprolol or isosorbide mononitrate having any connection with losing teeth. However, Coreg does identify periodontitis as a potential side effect. This disorder occurs when inflammation and infection of the gums is delayed or remains left untreat- ed. As a result, the teeth loosen and can eventually fall out. Symptoms of periodontitis include gums that bleed easily, are bright red or purple in color, hali- tosis (bad breath), gum tenderness (especially in the presence of abscess), and loose teeth that ulti- mately fall out. Dental plaque deposits under the gums may also be present. You should incorporate good and Coreg; and now isosorbide mononi- trate. Ever heard a tale like this? Any rec- ommendations? Oh, yeah. After my first triple bypass in At the same time, return to the doctor who prescribed your Coreg. Explain your situation and ask if another medication can be substituted that doesn’t have this devas- tating side effect. With respect to your loss of vision, this is a rare complication following open heart surgery, stroke, seizure, from treatment of some forms of chemotherapy, and the use of cyclosporine used to prevent organ trans- plant rejection. Vision, either full or partial, may return within days of the event in some cases. The outlook depends on the cause.
