12 www.DesertMessenger.com August 6, 2014 Shop till you drop By Maggie Ross When was the last time any of you had the opportunity to fi ll six shopping baskets to overfl owing and bring them home? Not very often these days, with the price of groceries. My husband Gene and I, Judy Necheff and Lois Ambuehl went to Lake Havasu on Monday to the 99c Store to do just that and more. We fi lled up our baskets and headed to the checkout lane, where the manager usually comes to help us. We had our money and were all ready to pay when it came up and we had $75.00 more dollars out of our $500.00 to spend. So we loaded up the truck and car and went back and shopped for more. We got some amazing prices and many of the items 3 and 4 for $99c. Pop, fro- zen meals, meats and dairy items like yogurt and cheese. Boxed meals, fresh produce and so much more includ- ing peanut butter and various types of cookies. We work very hard to provide a variety of items and include treats like pop, cookies and chips which nor- mally the Food Bank does not get. It is always a busy, but fun day and when we are done we have much gratitude to give to the Snowbirds, who come in the winter months, and give their blessings (money) so abundantly to Covenant Church. We go from 200 down to 20 in the summertime and we appreciate the help of volunteers like Lois and Judy and their husbands who helped us off load all the items at the Food Bank. Covenant Lutheran pro- vides funds for each of the four months of the summer when so many places close and things get a little tough. We also helped at the Community Picnic on Friday and hope that every- one attending had a wonderful time. School Backpacks generously donated by McDonald's here in Quartzsite, were handed out to the youth attend- ing. Along with a great free meal, provided by the local churches, there were goodies for the younger ones who did not receive a backpack.
