JULY 30 - AUGUST 5, 2014 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM downtown dev wfss Get Ready for Back to School Downtown! It has been a quick summer and coming to a close for those going back to school, but the fun is not ending! Children have played in the pool, had fun outside, gone to summer camp and visited grandparents all summer, but now it is almost time to head back to the books as classes start in Cumberland County in a few weeks. No worries though, Downtown Fayetteville has just what you need to be the best dressed and the best accessorized in the class. Before classes start though, make sure you have done it all before your all-day free days disappear during the week. If you have not visited the Whimsical Dogwoods downtown, follow the trail! Also, take some time to check out NC Veterans Park along with the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, make plans to do so Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Pick up some sweet treats at one of our fantastic sweet shops like Sweet Surprise Candy Buffet, Market Square Coffee House, Rude Awakening or Just Desserts or a picnic lunch at one of our fabulous restau- rants for an afternoon in the grass at Cross Creek Park, Linear Park or even Festival Park. For those wanting some active things to get your energy out, spend an afternoon at the Double Decker Skatepark at 500 Blount Street, one of the largest skate parks in NC. Or what about climbing walls at The Climbing Place at 436 West Russell Street, painting pottery at Greg's Art, Pottery and Gifts at 122 Maxwell Street, fencing at 207 B Donaldson Street and more. For those wanting to get a heads start on history classes, visit the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex at 801 Arsenal Avenue, the 1897 Poe House at 206 Bradford Avenue, the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum at 325 Franklin Street or the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Armory and Museum at 210 Burgess Street. You could also take a history tour, call Bruce Daws at 433-1457 for more information. And shopping is a necessity to make sure you are well-prepared for the school year. A quick walk around the district will yield fun decorative backpacks, lunch bags and other accessories needed for a successful year. Many downtown store owners have recently inventoried and stocked up with new items fresh for late summer and fall. Of course, our personable store owners are on hand if you need help, or even a second opinion. And it's the South, y'all, so don't forget to get your new lunch bags and clothes monogrammed at So Chic Bebe. Off to college? Check out the huge variety of East Carolina, UNC, Duke, NC State and more memorabilia such as towels, mugs, totes, outfits and more too. Of course, there are always nights and weekends and most know that downtown is a perfect place to spend those evening hours and breaks. So after the bell rings, see you downtown!
