The City Council ended its meeting by deciding it would be more efficient for event organiz- ers if the council wasn't making such decisions. The council authorized the use of River Park Aug. 16 for the second annual Tap into Te- hama microbrew festival and closed a public parking lot for the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce to hold three more beer gardens dur- ing the Wednesday night farm- ers market. The council then turned its attention to a proposal from City Manager Richard Crab- tree that through a new city or- dinance and resolution would leave such decisions in the fu- ture to the city's Technical Ad- visory Committee. It also allows for an appeal process to the City Council. Frost, born in Colorado, died July 30, 1989 at the age of 25 after landing in the path of a bull, which struck Frost in the back with his horn at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Ro- deo in Wyoming, according to Wrangler Network, which has been celebrating Frost's life with stories, photos and videos for its "25 years in 25 days" tribute. In 1988, a year after Frost won the world bull riding championship, and Red Rock, owned by Growney Brothers Rodeo Company of Red Bluff, was named the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Bucking Bull of the Year, Frost and the 1,800-pound bull paired for a seven-ride match series that drew exten- sive mainstream media atten- tion to the sport. In February, John Growney of Red Bluff spoke at Califor- nia State University, Fresno, telling the story of the series that made a stop in Red Bluff. "It was something that ev- erybody could understand," Growney said of the media attention the series garnered. "That these two world cham- pions were going to compete against each other." At the series' first stop at the Red Bluff Round-Up on April 17, 1988, Growney, who was good friends with Frost, said his bull received more fanfare than the cowboy. Growney said the crowd politely cheered when the an- nouncer asked, "How many are here for Lane Frost?," but when asked, "How many are here for Red Rock?," the re- action for the hometown bull was great. "This crowd went nuts," Growney said. "And Lane said he had never been any- where in his life where some- body was against him and they were for this bull." Frost was bucked after two seconds, Growney said, and perhaps was a bit stung as well. Frost was thrown from Red Rock again in Clovis, but successfully rode him at ro- deos in Redding and Liver- more and Sisters, Oregon be- fore he was thrown again at St. Paul Rodeo in Oregon. Going into Spanish Fork, Utah, Frost and Red Rock were tied 3-3. "Lane rode him there and that was it," Growney said, adding, "It was probably the greatest thing that ever hap- pened to rodeo. And proba- bly to this day it's the great- est thing that ever happened to rodeo. But we never knew, well nobody knows, that Lane would die the next year." Red Rock died June 8, 1994. Red Rock had been retired in 1987 after going unridden in 309 attempts but was brought back for the Challenge of the Champions series, according to Wrangler Network. Frost and Red Rock were inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1990. Visit wranglernetwork. com/news/lane-frost for more information on the life of the iconic cowboy. Tehama County Sheriff's Dep- uties were called to A&R Meats, 22777 Antelope Blvd., around 5:45 a.m. Thursday when store owner Russel Preul discovered the front window of the shop was broken and the register was missing, ac- cording to a press release issued by the sheriff's department. It appeared the suspects threw a rock through the front window, smashing it, then stole the regis- ter, which was within arm's reach of the shattered window, the re- lease said.
