CHI PSI • UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON • SUMMER 2014 A T h e retê HELP US MAINTAIN OUR STATUS AS THE BEST FRATERNITY ON CAMPUS $109,000 Needed to Reach Our $l Million Campaign Goal M y wife and I recently attended a gathering in Scottsdale of Chi Psis living or snowbirding in Arizona. Yes; people do live here in the desert year- round! Julianne and I are now living in Tucson. It was a delightful afternoon/evening and plans are to make this an annual affair. Any of you snowbirding here in Arizona, let the Central Office know and you will be on the mailing list for next year. Several of us got together with Executive Director Sam Bessey, Eta Delta '97, to talk about the various Alphas. In the course of this discussion, Sam stated that we have only two Alphas that clearly are "the best fraternities on their respective campuses." One of these is, of course, Theta Delta. It is hard to express the sense of pride I experienced to hear Sam say that Chi Psi is clearly the best fraternity at the University of Washington. In fact, here are some of the awards they recently received from the Interfraternity Council: Outstanding Philanthropy Involvement, Outstanding New Member Programming, Outstanding Chapter Programming, Outstanding Chapter Management, Outstanding Recruitment Programming, and Chapter of the Year. There's a reason that they win the Thayer Trophy as often as they do. Our undergraduates are a remarkable group of young men and they are able to replace themselves upon graduation with another group of equally remarkable young men. Considering that they are housed in two entirely separate locations, one can only imagine what they will accomplish living under one roof. Becoming the best of anything is an incredible accomplishment; staying on top is even more remarkable. The fraternity system at U of W is extremely competitive and providing our undergraduates with outstanding facilities is a must to retain our #l status. This is why our board developed a plan to construct an annex on the Lodge property. As you know, the goal for donations is a minimum of $l million. As of today we have commitments totaling $890,980, which means we need additional pledges of nearly $109,000 to meet this goal so that we can proceed to the construction stage. We have 776 living Theta Delta alumni, only 104 of whom have made pledges. That's about a 13% response rate, far less than we had hoped for. We've experienced much better responses when we have been able to meet with alumni face to face. For obvious reasons, it is not possible to meet face to face with all 776 of you. I hope that each of you shares the feeling of pride that I did when Sam told me that Chi Psi is clearly the best fraternity at the U of W. I'm asking you to please help in getting this great program under construction. Just recall some of the great times you experienced during your years at the Lodge and fill out the enclosed pledge form today (if you have not already done so) so that we can add your name to the growing list of donors on page 2. The banquet was held on campus at the University of Washington Club. It was a great opportunity for alumni to not only catch up with brothers they had not seen in a while but also to meet some of the tremendous young actives who make up the chapter today. The evening included updates on happenings at the Lodge from #1 Colton Perry '15. The recruitment chairman also gave an update on recruitment thus far, and it sounds like they are off to a quick start. Cody Saban '14, a member of the IFC, gave us an overall perspective of the Greek system on campus. Lastly, we gave a quick update on the progress of the Building on a Tradition of Excellence campaign. It was a great time had by all.
