Accept the FTCC Challenge: The Call of Duty by DR. KENJUANA McCRAY and SHANDRIKA McNAIR Are you willing to accept the challenge? This is not a challenge of standing in a bucket of ice or having a bucket of cold water dumped on you. This challenge is the opportunity to pursue a career helping other people and making a difference in the lives of others. No, it's not the military, but it is an opportunity to serve your community and individuals by making a positive difference in the lives of others. Social workers and psychologists do just that; they are professionals who serve others and make huge impacts in the lives of others. The Fayetteville community is filled with social workers and psychologists who have accepted the call of duty. There are thousands of abused and neglected children, disabled veterans and mentally challenged individuals in our community who need help. Social workers are employed in a number of fields to provide services in areas such as domestic violence, substance abuse, hospice, child protective services, homeless services, military support services, schools and mental health facilities, along with a variety of other services and programs. Likewise, a wide variety of people are also helped by psychologists. Psychologists are employed in schools, medical centers, prisons, mental health clinics, business industries, rehabilitation and long- term care centers and private therapy practices. They administer tests and assessments, conduct research and analyze data to help people improve their lives. Fayetteville Technical Community College can help you accept the call-of-duty challenge. The Division of Social Sciences, Humanities and Communication offers pre-major concentrations in psychology and social work. The pre-major concentrations are two-year programs specifically designed to prepare students to enter a psychology or social work bachelor's degree program at a university. Several UNC system colleges and private colleges have partnered with FTCC to ensure a smooth transition for students when they transfer into a four-year institution. The pre-major programs are further enhanced by faculty members who help students achieve both their personal and professional goals. FTCC offers a Psychology Club and Social Work Club. The Social Work and Psychology Clubs allow students to participate in community activities, gain knowledge about these professions and form supportive relationships with faculty and students. The Social Work Club and Psychology Club have accepted the call of duty. Social Work Club members, in collaboration with other FTCC students, participated in the Heart of Carolina Food Drive held annually by the Second Harvest Food bank. The Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) supervisor visited FTCC to inform students about child abuse and neglect and provided students with information on how students could become a GAL. Students involved in the Psychology Club have fed the homeless, volunteered at rest homes and collected items for families in need. Learn more about how FTCC can help you begin your journey of becoming a social worker or psychologist, and we promise to have fun learning, serving and building relationships with others. For more information, please contact Anne Greene (at (910) 678-8511 or by email greenea@faytechcc.edu) or Lonnie Griffin (at (910) 678-8302 or griffinl@faytechcc.edu).
